Your generosity has provided students with the opportunity to engage deeply with a text that is both intellectually challenging and incredibly relevant to the world they are growing up in today.\r\n\r\nThrough your generous donations, students were able to examine how rhetoric, media, and language shape public perception. 1984 has become a powerful tool in my classroom for helping students think critically about the information they encounter every day. Through reading and discussion, students explored themes such as propaganda, censorship, misinformation, and the importance of protecting democratic institutions. More importantly, they are learning how to question thoughtfully, analyze evidence, and become informed citizens rather than passive consumers of information.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts of this experience has been watching students make authentic connections between the novel and the world around them. Many students were already hearing references to 1984 in media and online discussions and were eager to understand those references for themselves. Even students who are sometimes reluctant readers have become engaged in class conversations because the themes feel immediate and meaningful to their lives.\r\n\r\nThank you again for investing in my students, their education, and their ability to think critically about the world around them. Unfortunately, I was unable to purchase the books mentioned in my original post, but I made every effort to use the funds wisely. First, I ordered beautifully bound journals and pens to give as gifts to each student in my Creative Writing class. I believe this will encourage them to continue writing after graduation. If I have any extras, I plan to share them with members of our literary magazine, Inkblot, and with other student writers in my different course. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, I acquired several materials for our Creative Writing class activities. This includes collections of writing prompts, magnetic poetry, writing games, rewards, and project supplies. These resources help create a more interactive class environment and inspire student creativity. Our students were incredibly excited when we received the 3D printing filament. Filament is the material used by a 3D printer to create objects—much like ink is used in a traditional paper printer.\r\n\r\nBecause of your donation, students had access to a wide variety of colors and enough filament to successfully bring their designs to life. Recently, students have been working on a creative engineering project in which they designed mini golf holes. Each student was assigned a different hole shape and was responsible for developing the full design. They demonstrated impressive creativity and problem-solving skills throughout the process, and it was rewarding to see their ideas transformed into physical objects through 3D printing. We have included photos of their completed golf holes with this project.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, students will continue using the printers for an exciting new challenge: designing and printing custom mini figures, similar to LEGO-style characters. Students will create individual parts such as the head, body, arms, legs, hands, feet, hips, and joints, ensuring that each piece fits together properly to allow for movable features. This project will further strengthen their design, engineering, and precision skills.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your kindness and for helping provide our students with meaningful, hands-on STEM learning opportunities. We used them right away, clarifying old assignments, deadlines, where to find new materials, and the importance of responsibility and accountability. The 10-shelf paper station is our new favorite spot; students feel empowered, being able to quickly find the correct assignment or reference sheet without asking for help. Having everything accessible and clearly labeled has made our room feel calmer, more structured, and more supportive of independent work and establishing routines.\r\n\r\nOur students are always asking for their favorite colored folder and sharpies with which to label them, and they were overjoyed at the colors they could now use. These may feel like small things, but it's little touches like these that have a big impact on their sense of ownership. I had one student who lost her first sticky note and was thrilled to see more coming her way–those notes made her feel welcomed and appreciated as she joined us midway through the quarter.\r\n\r\nOur next steps involve using these tools to reteach and sustain long-term organization habits in our students. In our current unit, students will be tracking character development and motifs in Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon, and having materials sorted and easy to access will help them remain organized, build independence and confidence, and ultimately help them function more efficiently as students.
