For the first day of school, each student was given a school survival kit where they received starbursts and smarties on their desk. All of the students loved getting this treat on their desk. In addition, the chewy granola bars are useful for the care bin. Each day, I put the breakfast bars in the bin and the students can grab one when they are feeling hungry. My school just hosted the first STEAM day for the school year. Since I had the materials, the students in the fifth grade were able to create, design, and construct their own parachute. Students used the coffee filters, cups, and string to help with their design. Students were very creative in making their own individual parachute. Also, students got to grab whatever supplies they needed to make it. Every parachute was different, which was the best part. Then, students got to test their prototype of a parachute by dropping them from the stairwell. For a special feature, the students were given a peep to create the effect of a real parachute. Students really enjoyed this STEAM activity. It was possible because of donors like you supporting classrooms. My students got lead the activity by putting the soil into the pot and they will sprinkle seeds into the pot. Lastly, my students got to give an eco-friendly gift to the different classrooms by using the bookmarks, pencils, keychains, and stickers to spread awareness. When they deliver the gift to the other classrooms at the school, they will attach a note to the gift on how to help the planet.
