My students were able to replicate how the three different boundaries that occur with tectonic plates. I was able to display the instructions on the board with the document scanner. Students were able to have fun with the graham crackers and got to physically manipulate the graham crackers to see how the boundaries move and why. Students were able to replicate divergent boundaries by spreading frosting on the plates and on the graham crackers that were provided, and then pulling them away from each other to show how magma rises to the surface during this boundary. Students were then able to replicate convergent boundaries by pushing the graham crackers into each other. Finally, students were able to replicate transform boundaries by sliding the graham crackers next to each other. \r\n\r\nAfter students completed their boundaries, they were able to take pictures of what they did and print them out on the photo printer to add to their presentations on their findings. Due to your generosity, my students are able to remember the different boundaries and how they affect the Earth's surface. It has been a dream come true for so many of my students who have gotten more options for them to move their bodies in ways that a traditional classroom do not cater to.\r\n\r\nFor group activities, my crowded classroom that doesn't usually lend itself to pulling up a chair at the end of a table for easy collaboration...not anymore! The unboxing was so fun and exciting! And, the huge box that the stools came in became an instant time machine. Overruled to the phone booth and the race car. The time machine just made for a better tool for teaching and learning about Geologic Time and the fossil record!\r\n\r\nThank you so much for supporting our classroom! Because of you, my students are using hands-on games every day to practice speaking, listening, reading, and vocabulary in a fun and low-stress way. One of our favorite moments was during a group game of Catch Phrase, students were working together to explain words and phrases to each other in English then laughing when they figured out the correct word. These games have turned language practice into meaningful conversations, teamwork, and real confidence-building moments in our classroom.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the new materials, their excitement was immediate and contagious. They couldn't wait to explore the cards, games, and visuals, and many asked if we could start playing right away. At first my students felt nervous about using English, but as soon as they started playing, their walls lowered, they jumped in, laughed, and supported one another. The games made language learning feel safe and accessible.\r\n\r\nNext, we are using these language games to support a current reading and writing unit focused on main idea, details, and academic vocabulary. Students will rotate through game stations to practice new words, retell texts, and build sentences before applying those skills to writing projects. Just to become heartbroken when I saw them broken or left on the ground in the hallway. I would pick them up and put them in a jar by the door, in hopes that students would realize that the pencils they threw to the wayside would come back to them for the next class period. However, these pencils were then unloved and rejected due to being half of their original size or having no usable eraser. \r\n\r\nI realized there had to be another way.\r\n\r\nWith the organization, tools, and the pencil sharpener, which is now anchored to my cabinet, we have a system which holds students accountable for borrowing and returning a pencil anytime they need it. With our new manual pencil sharpener, we also no longer go through electric pencil sharpeners, which would become broken so often that the office refused to give us another one.\r\n\r\nEach desk has a pencil assigned to it in the holder, in case a student needs it. It is then easy to see if a pencil has not been returned due to the assigned number. It is with heartfelt gratitude that I write this letter to demonstrate this seamless and manageable system, which no longer causes so much waste and strife! Not only were we able to study first-hand the development of the embryos, hatchlings, and developing babies, but many students were able to adopt them and raise them at home as their own pets. Due to your generous donations, we had food, supplies, and all the basics required to raise these fascinating creatures. The students learned all of the steps to set up the brine shrimp factory for the hatchlings, how to maintain proper water chemistry, and how to fully care for the axolotls through their infancy stages.\r\n\r\nOne of the most special things about axolotl eggs is that their outer membrane is fully transparent, so students can watch the details of the embryos develop. This was such an incredible experience to go hand-in-hand with our comparative anatomy unit and our study of embryology as evidence for Evolution.\r\n\r\nSchool is starting in a few days, and many of my students are in contact. It is so rewarding to hear them tell me all about how their axolotls did over the summer, once they left the classroom.
