They love going over to the snacks and deciding what to have that day. They are middle schoolers, so they are always ready for a delicious snack, and this way, we both get what we need. I love their faces when they see the cool choices before them. Thank you for making this possible for us!\r\n\r\nThe next steps for this project are just to continue it through to the end of the school year. It can be difficult to stay motivated on these lessons, but the thought of a yummy treat as a reward really makes a difference. These titles have opened the door for rich whole-class novel studies that strengthen essential literacy skills such as analyzing theme, tracking character development, exploring symbolism, and supporting ideas with clear text evidence.\r\n\r\nWith Holes, students eagerly untangle the layered plot structure and examine how choices, consequences, and family history intersect. The novel provides wonderful opportunities to teach cause and effect, characterization, and irony. In Esperanza Rising, students explore figurative language, historical context, and the theme of resilience. The story sparks thoughtful conversations about identity, perseverance, and empathy. Our classroom discussions have become deeper and more student-driven as learners cite passages, build on each other's ideas, and make meaningful text-to-world connections.\r\n\r\nIt has been especially rewarding to watch students who may not always see themselves as \"readers\" become engaged in these stories.
