High-low books (high-interest/low reading level) have engaging titles and eye-catching covers. The topics are engaging for students who are in the 7th/8th grades and include characters and situations readers can relate to. Many of my students read 3 to 5 grades below their grade level, but do not want to read a book that draws attention to their difficulties with reading. This often leads to students grabbing any grade-level book from the library and "fake" reading during in class silent reading sessions. This is not helping students increase their reading. Please help me to break this cycle and encourage a love of reading.
