When the magazines first arrived, students were immediately eager to explore them by flipping through pages, pointing out interesting articles, and asking thoughtful questions about topics that connected directly to the world around them.\r\n\r\nWe have been using these resources in a variety of ways, including weekly current events discussions and small-group analysis activities. One especially meaningful moment occurred during a lesson on global issues, when students read an article and then worked together to discuss different perspectives and possible solutions. The combination of print magazines and digital resources, such as videos, interactive activities, and text-to-speech supports, has allowed all learners, including English Language Learners and students with diverse needs, to access the content and participate fully. Students are building critical thinking skills by analyzing information, forming opinions, and supporting their ideas with evidence.\r\n\r\nThese materials have also helped make reading more dynamic and engaging in our classroom. Students are more motivated to read because the content feels current and relevant to their lives. As we move forward, students will continue to use these resources to research global topics, participate in debates, and complete projects that connect geography to real-world issues. Having a class set of this book has allowed us to read together, share in the adventure, and dive deeply into both literacy and real-world connections.\r\n\r\nThrough reading The Summit, students are developing important skills such as analyzing plot and character development, making predictions, and drawing connections between the text and geographic concepts. As the characters navigate the challenges of climbing Mount Everest, students are learning about physical geography, climate, altitude, and the human-environment relationship in one of the most extreme places on Earth. These lessons have sparked thoughtful discussions about perseverance, teamwork, and the impact humans have on the environment.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom has become an engaging and collaborative experience. Students follow along eagerly, often stopping to ask questions, share observations, and make connections to what we are learning in geography. Many students who might not typically feel excited about reading have become deeply invested in the story, eager to find out what happens next. One student who usually struggles to stay focused has been especially engaged, often volunteering to read aloud and contributing insightful comments during discussions.\r\n\r\nThis project has helped transform reading from a passive activity into an immersive, shared journey. With classroom sets of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and Ghost, students are not only reading more, but they are also connecting deeply with the characters and the real-world issues these stories explore.\r\n\r\nThese texts have allowed us to introduce and strengthen important literacy skills such as analyzing character growth, identifying themes, and making meaningful text-to-self and text-to-world connections. Just as importantly, students are learning how to engage in thoughtful, respectful discussions (listening to one another, asking questions, and supporting their ideas with evidence). Reading in our classroom has become an active, student-centered experience, with book clubs giving students the opportunity to take ownership of their learning and share their voices in meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nI have already seen a shift in engagement, especially among students who were previously hesitant readers. Many are drawn to the authenticity of the characters and the challenges they face, which reflect experiences that feel real and relevant. One student who rarely participated before is now eager to contribute during discussions, while others have expressed how much they appreciate reading stories where they can see themselves or better understand others. Students are exploring what daily life was like for early settlers, and they've been especially excited to participate in hands-on activities like churning butter, creating simple tools, and comparing pioneer chores to modern conveniences. The books you provided have given them valuable background knowledge and real-life stories that help them better understand the challenges and resilience of pioneer families. The classroom supplies have allowed them to create journals, artifacts, and visual projects that bring this time period to life.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students will continue building their understanding of pioneer life by completing a \"day in the life\" project, where they will write and present from the perspective of a child living during that time. Students use equipment to complete job-based tasks, follow multi-step directions, and practice important workplace behaviors like time management, organization, and responsibility—helping bridge the gap between school and future employment.\r\n\r\nThe new equipment and much-needed supplies have been especially exciting for our students. These resources allow them to actively participate in meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that simulate real job tasks. Students are more engaged, confident, and motivated because they are learning by doing rather than just observing. The sense of accomplishment they feel after completing tasks has made a noticeable difference in their attitude toward learning.\r\n\r\nThe snacks provided for job credit have also had a powerful impact. Instead of trying to make crepes in pans that were too thick or uneven, students are now able to practice proper crepe technique the way it is meant to be done. They are learning how to control heat, swirl the batter evenly, and flip with confidence. During our international foods unit, they also use the new wok pans to cook fried rice and chow mein each semester. The woks allow them to practice authentic stir-fry technique, high heat cooking, and proper ingredient movement for a much better final product.\r\n\r\nWhen the pans arrived and I showed them to my classes, the reaction was priceless. There were happy smiles, cheers, and lots of excited questions about when we would get to use them. Many students immediately started talking about how their food would turn out better. It was such a powerful moment because they felt supported and taken seriously as young chefs.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue building their skills through hands-on cooking labs that focus on technique and flavor development. We will be practicing more advanced crepe fillings and sauces, and refining stir-fry timing and knife skills with the wok pans.
