The calculators have been especially helpful during warm-ups, guided practice, and independent work. Students can focus on learning the steps for solving equations without becoming discouraged by difficult calculations.\r\n\r\nThe sensory tools have also made a positive difference. Right now, we are practicing by making our own white shirts with autism awareness designs. My students with autism in high school are learning each step of the process, from choosing a design, preparing the materials, using the machine, and printing the shirts. One special moment was seeing students proudly help each other during the process and celebrate when their designs came to life.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the Cricut machine and the materials, they were very excited and curious. They could not wait to try it and asked many questions about how it works. They were happy to be involved in every step and felt proud when they wore the shirts they helped create. Seeing their own work on a finished shirt gave them confidence and made them feel successful.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue practicing so students can fully master how to use the machine independently.
