Your support for STEM books has done far more than add titles to our shelves — it has opened doors for our students to see themselves as scientists, engineers, problem-solvers, and innovators.\r\n\r\nIn our third-grade classroom, many students are English Language Learners in a Title I school setting. Access to high-quality, engaging STEM literature is not just helpful — it is essential. These books provide rich vocabulary, real-world context, and visual supports that help students build language skills while exploring exciting concepts in science, technology, engineering, and math. When students read about robotics, ecosystems, inventors, space exploration, or simple machines, they are not only learning content; they are developing confidence in understanding academic language.\r\n\r\nSince adding these STEM books to our classroom library, the change has been immediate and inspiring. Students who once hesitated to pick up nonfiction are now eagerly flipping through pages about volcanoes, coding, weather patterns, and famous scientists. During independent reading time, I see small groups gathered together, pointing at diagrams, discussing experiments, and asking thoughtful questions. These conversations are building both literacy and collaboration skills.\r\n\r\nFor many of our students, these books provide their first exposure to careers in STEM fields. Representation matters deeply. When students read about diverse scientists and engineers who look like them or share similar backgrounds, they begin to imagine new futures for themselves. They start to say things like, \"I want to invent something,\" or \"I could be an engineer.\" Those statements reflect a powerful shift in self-belief.\r\n\r\nSTEM books also strengthen critical thinking. Informational texts encourage students to analyze diagrams, interpret data, compare solutions, and ask deeper questions. Instead of simply memorizing facts, students are learning how to think like scientists — observing carefully, forming hypotheses, and seeking evidence. These habits of mind will support them far beyond third grade.\r\n\r\nFor English Language Learners especially, STEM literature provides meaningful context for vocabulary development. Words like \"experiment,\" \"hypothesis,\" \"adaptation,\" and \"innovation\" become part of everyday classroom conversation. The visuals, captions, and real-world connections make complex ideas accessible and engaging. Students are building academic language in an authentic and empowering way.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has also helped create excitement around reading itself. When students are fascinated by a topic — whether it's outer space, animals, coding, or inventors — they are motivated to read more. Increased engagement leads to stronger fluency, comprehension, and overall academic growth. The books you helped provide are not sitting on shelves; they are being explored, discussed, and loved.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, your donation communicates to our students that their education matters. It shows them that people beyond our classroom believe in their potential. That message alone builds confidence and pride.\r\n\r\nThank you for investing in our young learners. Before, some of them would shut down after a few sentences because they were unsure of the words. Now they use the iPad to listen to the story first, then try reading it themselves. One of my quietest students now asks if he can \"try again\" after hearing the model reading. That never happened before.\r\nDuring intervention, the iPad helps students practice phonics and sight words privately, which protects their confidence. They don't feel different, they feel successful. I've seen students who avoided reading volunteers to read with a partner after practicing on the iPad.\r\nWriting has changed too. Students use speech-to-text and can finally get their thoughts onto the page without getting stuck on spelling. \r\nWe also use the iPad during science. Students research simple topics and then explain the concepts to their group. Some of my struggling readers become the \"experts\" because they can replay information and prepare what they want to say.
