Our students have significant developmental and communication needs, so reading in our music classroom is highly interactive. Students participate through music, movement, instruments, pictures, and adaptive communication. The books help us work on attending, matching, identifying concepts, making choices, following directions, sequencing, and responding to questions.\r\n\r\nThe books connect literacy with musical and social skills. Students can respond using AAC devices, PECS, gestures, eye gaze, or other individualized communication methods. They especially enjoy books with repeated actions, sounds, or musical responses, turning reading into an active learning experience.\r\n\r\nThe Boomwhackers and curriculum add visual, auditory, and hands-on learning to our instruction. Their different pitches and colors support imitation, discrimination, motor coordination, turn-taking, rhythm, and early musical concepts. The students got to use the new watercolors and were so excited. The colors are vibrant, and nothing is missing. It will save on supplies and waste without sacrificing student choice. My students don't share well, so they each get their own tray, and thus far, if they are out of a color, they have to pick something else. Having a variety of construction paper available to us makes learning about different cultures and artists much more hands-on.\r\n\r\nWhen I first opened the box and started pulling out the packages of construction paper, my students were right there at my shoulder, looking. We looked at all the colors and started naming them. Everyone was so excited. Now I wish we had some way of repurposing the chocolate milks that end up getting thrown away.\r\nThank you so much for providing this opportunity for my students as well as the snacks for the animals. It's great for both physical fitness and mental health.
