The new materials also encouraged independent reading and sparked spontaneous conversations about themes, characters, and writing styles—absolutely the kind of conversations that we hope students will engage in more.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, the books made class more fun. Over the past two years, dedicated 12th-grade ASL students have translated over 50 books focusing on Deaf culture, hearing loss, deaf-blindness and ASL.\r\nThis year, WoodburyHigh School American Sign Language (ASL) students continued this inclusion project promoting ASL while also educating students about Deaf Culture, ASL, hearing loss and deafblindness . Students in ASL Concurrent Enrollment/Level 4 used ASL to translate children's books. At the end of the book, students selected 10 signs to teach students. The ASL program collaborated with elementary school media specialists to set up times for the ASL students to visit to promote this project and the final projects. During these visits, elementary students were able to ask questions about ASL, Deaf Culture, etc. \r\nWith the help of donors like you, ASL students were able to donate over 150 books to South Washington County elementary schools! Students will learn another culture and language. Knowledge and inclusion are powerful! While students can easily play chess with the computer or someone online, it was more engaging to see them playing live and in-person all while simultaneously having other conversations and getting to know their classmates as they played. \r\n\r\nSimilarly, I'm working to get students more interactively involved with one another in my English courses through literature circles and book clubs. They had already begun bonding in the way kids can when they find a place to relax and get work done in a productive and supportive environment. Currently, I only work with certain sophomores; in the future, I want any student who needs a coaching approach to their writing skill development to be able to come to Writing Lab. We designed an experiment using the quad growing system to help us isolate variables. Radish plants in each quad were treated with different concentrations of salt solution to measure relative toxicity. Students used different road salt products, one claiming to be vegetation and pet safe. They used their data to support/refute the claim from the manufacturer. \r\n\r\nStudents love growing things! They were excited to take care of their radishes every day, while monitoring growth. Without artificial light sources, we cannot grow plants in our school and we did not have a portable growing system until this project was funded. \r\n\r\nThe lab students completed connected what they were learning about plant anatomy and photosynthesis, to cell biology and homeostasis.
