Times have changed from when I was in school when we learned to \"borrow from the tens and cross out the ones\". Now we teach the students to use hands-on materials, like the base ten blocks. Using the blocks helps them visually see and understand how to regroup a ten for ten ones, or to regroup one hundred for ten tens. I have been using the wooden base-ten blocks for years, and I can honestly tell you that the foam ones are a life-changer!!
