It set the stage that our read aloud time each day is something fun to look forward to. When I glance up from the book, I see their faces glued to the illustrations, eyes shining, and you can hear a pin drop, they are that attentive. Thanks to your generous donation, they were able to take a copy of the book home to re-read themselves and share with their families. Many have gone on to read more books in the series. We started the year writing some narrative fiction using some of the characters from the book and I have never seen 8 year olds write so much with such enthusiasm. There is a collective groan when writing time is over. Those books are worth their weight in gold, and I am so appreciative to you for providing them. \r\n\r\nI named this project \"Tackling the Pencil Project\" because last spring the school ran out of pencils and wow, that was inconvenient. Every day there were broken pencils on the floor of the classroom. Chewed pencils. Snapped pencils. I am happy to report that is not the case this year. While the pencil holders I'd envisioned for their desks were not available, we have named our pencils and that seems to be doing the trick. Bob, Jeffrey, Lil Pink: whatever name they chose, the students are taking much better care of their pencils. Turns out a quality electric pencil sharpener makes a big difference, too. Sometimes, little things make a big impact.\r\n\r\nThank you for your support of my students and their learning!","fullyFundedDate":1754077487623,"projectUrl":"project/tackling-the-pencil-problem/9484065/","projectTitle":"Tackling the Pencil Problem","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Graham","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3590449_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1553264771281","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3590449"},{"teacherId":3030318,"projectId":9180964,"letterContent":"My fourth graders are thrilled to have a standing workspace! Because of these new books to add to my unit, students at the lower level had books that they were able to read independently. Students were also able to learn about immigration from various locations instead of the few I had. These new books were set in more current locations of immigration to the United States. \r\n\r\nStudents were able to self select the book that they wanted to read. In our discussions, students shared that they loved the covers and chose books partially because of the covers. They learned about the problems immigrants faced during various historical eras; World War I and II, Vietnam War, Castro's dictatorship, and immigration from Syria, Mexico, and the Middle East. Students discussed and wrote essays about how the immigrants were alike and different.","fullyFundedDate":1746798525635,"projectUrl":"project/everyone-can-read/9313419/","projectTitle":"Everyone Can Read","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Nelson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5621119"},{"teacherId":5343823,"projectId":9330950,"letterContent":"Thank you for funding this project! The flashcards are the perfect addition to our Secret Stories learning. We share silly phonics stories all the time, but it's hard for kids to remember them all! The flashcards help us revisit old stories. This comes in especially handy when students are trying to spell a word and aren't sure which pattern to use-we can pull out our flashcards and they remember the story to go along with it! I'm glad I could squeeze in these flashcards with my current class, and I'm looking forward to hitting the ground running in September with my new group. In the past I have had to find the books online and show the videos to the class. My students loved the lucky candies many of them asked for seconds so they could share them with family members. Many remarked that it was not like any type of candy they had had before. I was fortunate enough to be able to make all of my students little gifts of stickers, fortune cards and some candies to help celebrate Lunar New Year. We celebrated it on the day before February Vacation and had lots of fun sharing their fortunes with each other. I love this thing!\". \r\n\r\nThey have used them in a multiplication race game and when solving facts on the computer. As students learned how to make equivalent fractions to add and subtract fractions, some used the pop-its to help them find the common denominators. One student blurted, \"These are great.\" as he was solving problems. When we were using these tools for patterns they found ones I had not seen. When students see others using them they ask if they can use them, too. These simple tools seem to be a big motivator for students to learn facts and complete their practice assignments.
