My students are currently learning about reading and social studies through a basal reader. They are often times unengaged when learning standards through the text included in them. "Hana's Suitcase" is an engaging non-fiction text that easily connects to multiple learning standards in several curricula areas. Students that I read the book with in the past wanted to keep reading and readily engaged and applied learning. The district in Connecticut I came from had a class set of these books. The new school in Western Maine I relocated to does not have this set or many other engaging authentic trade texts.
