To wrap up our unit on evolutionary history, my 8th graders completed a hands-on dissection of squid. The purpose was to compare the internal structures to a common ancestor, the belemnite.\r\n\r\nA standout moment was when students carefully extracted the gladius, or \"pen.\" Holding that thin, plastic-like structure, they attempted to visualize how it evolved from the heavy, internal shells of their prehistoric cousins. It also sparked a discussion about the level of protection the fragile structure could offer compared to the exoskeleton of arthropods and the human skeleton.\r\n\r\nWhen the lab kits were opened, there was a mix of high-energy excitement. Having participated in last year's frog dissection (also courtesy of donations from Donors Choose), the students were already familiar with lab procedures and expectations. Many of my students had never seen a squid up close, let alone explored its internal anatomy. A few students were surprised to know that these are the very same creatures they eat as appetizers when they order calamari.\r\n\r\nThank you for giving my students these specimens. You allowed them to be true scientists! I am excited to see how students begin to use these materials to tell their own stories. English learners have also been able to learn new vocabulary and use it in context using these resources. With regard to the books, many of my students have gravitated towards the new literature they have access to. It has become a hot topic and hot commodity in the classroom which has moved us closer to our goal of embracing more challenging but equally interesting literature.
