One of my young students with autism is nonverbal. One day, he independently pulled a Dog Man book from the bookshelf and brought it to me because he wanted me to read it to him. As we read together, we stopped along the way so he could try to repeat words after me. He attempted to say at least ten different words! As his teacher, it was incredibly exciting and meaningful to hear him use his voice and engage so enthusiastically with a book.\r\n\r\nThe graphic novels have also helped build my students' confidence. A few days each week, I give them time to read or explore books independently. When they see the colorful illustrations and accessible format of the graphic novels, they feel like successful readers. That sense of accomplishment encourages them to keep trying and helps develop a genuine love of books.\r\n\r\nThank you so much for supporting my students and providing materials that help them grow in confidence, communication, and literacy. Each student receives a classroom budget and must decide how much money to spend and how much to save. One especially rewarding moment was watching students compare snack prices, count their money, and determine whether they could afford an item while still meeting their savings goal.\r\n\r\nThe students were extremely excited when they first saw the snack cart. They immediately wanted to explore the different choices and learn how our classroom supermarket would work. The snacks have made practicing math and financial skills more engaging and meaningful because the students are working toward something that genuinely motivates them.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue building students' skills in counting money, making purchases, calculating change, budgeting, and saving. Students will also have opportunities to earn additional classroom money by completing helpful jobs. At the end of each week, they will decide whether to spend their earnings or save for a larger reward.
