Most homes here in Eastern KY have a regular freshwater aquarium with fish that are common to this part of the Appalachian Mountains. Having a saltwater aquarium in our classroom will be something different for not only my students in 4th grade but for our whole school as well. I don't know of any classroom around, especially in our county that has a saltwater aquarium full of saltwater life. We live in a high poverty county, so many of my students will never be able to travel to the ocean, much less scuba dive with these invertebrates and see them in their natural habitat. By having this saltwater aquarium in our classroom, my students will be able to observe how these animals react to their environment and with each other. There is something very soothing about the sound of running water and watching fish swim around.
A lot of our students, like many others in this country, comes from a rough home life, so by providing them with the opportunity to witness something exotic and exciting when they come to school, may be the highlight of their day.
Thank you and God Bless
