For our entire school year our classroom did not have to worry about having snack during the day. This was so important for student's focus. With students not worrying about being hungry during the day, their focus on work but so much stronger. Providing snacks also helped to ensure that no student went hungry. Our snack supply was so great that I was even able to send snacks home with students who needed it. \r\n\r\nProviding snacks was also a great opportunity to teach students about nutritious vs. non nutritious snacks. There were lessons on what is in our food and how we want food that gives us long lasting energy. We were able to look at the nutrition facts of different snacks and compare the information. We have had a great time exploring new foods, understanding how proper food fuels our bodies, and even talking about what the nutrition labels mean on the back of food packages. Many students in our classroom do not have access to healthy food choices or have never seen the options available. With this project, many students have gained an understanding of new foods. \r\n\r\nOur classroom was full of excitement when the snacks were delivered! Some students have never seen so many boxes of food before and could not wait to dive in. Each day was full of fun as we opened new boxes, guessed what was inside, and enjoyed the surprise. \r\n\r\nLearning about the food pyramid was an extension of this donation. We were able to identify where our snack would go on the food pyramid and what kind of nutrients were fueling our body. This was a great way to introduce how certain foods give us certain nutrients. So many students were able to connect this to how plants need nutrients to survive! We were able to learn about how nutrients give us energy and our bodies need energy throughout the day. We even experimented one day and skipped snacks! My extra book bins always come in handy as we keeping adding to our book collection each year with new genres and titles. The bins keep all the books organized and I am able to see clearly through each of the bins to know which books I am pulling from my library closet. I am also able to keep them organized by genre and students are able to pick books from these bins quickly and efficiently. The kids also enjoy having the book bags to bring books they are currently reading home with them.
