The science of reading is clear: student choice is the single most effective way to foster a lifelong habit. Research from the Scholastic Kids & Family Reading Report shows that 89% of children say their favorite books are the ones they picked out for themselves. By providing a diverse selection of texts in our vending machine, we aren't just giving them something to read; we are giving them the power to identify as \"readers\" who have their own unique tastes and interests. \r\n\r\nThe excitement this machine generates is palpable. You can feel the energy shift when students gather around the glass to browse the new titles. Most importantly, this project is built on the foundation of equity and inclusion. Instead of making students \"earn\" a book through high-stakes performance or behavior charts—which often leaves the same students behind—every single student in our school gets the opportunity to select a book for free. This removes the barrier of access and ensures that every child, regardless of their circumstances, can experience the joy of owning a brand-new book they truly want to read.\r\n\r\nThank you - from the bottom of our hearts - for being leaders of literacy.
