Many students who come to my office to talk or problem solve are anxious and scared. Being able to give them something to play with while we talk can distract them from their anxiety, fear and, or frustration. Coloring can help a little girl have a place to look while she is telling me about what is going on at home. It gives her permission not to have to look me in the eyes while talking about an uncomfortable situation. Coloring can also provide respite and distraction for a grief stricken/ frustrated/ traumatized student who just needs a break. Students play card games in my office at lunch. It is a great way for them to engage with each other. It provides a fun, semi- structured atmosphere where they can practice social emotional skills. I like to play card games with students as a way to help build relationships. Being able to laugh and create fun moments can make it easier to share tougher ones. The items I have listed in this grant will allow me to reach kids who need to talk, play with kids who need connection and give respite to those who need a little distraction.
