Some students use the same fidget each time they want one, and other students use a different fidget each time they want one. The day the sensory items arrived, the students were eager to look at and touch them. This helps students build confidence in their problem-solving skills while fostering collaboration and discussion with peers.\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, their reactions were a mix of curiosity and excitement. Many of them were immediately drawn to the construction paper,3-D pen, and the pompoms, eagerly picking up items and asking questions. One student said, \"It's a good thing we got these dry erase erasers, last time I had to use my hand.\" \r\nThe next steps for my students in our current classroom project involve applying what they've learned through hands-on activities and group collaboration. Boomwhackers provide a station for students to explore the connection between instrument size and musical pitch. (students with special needs are currently enjoying stations in music class.) Finally as an instrument for converting rhythm compositions to melodies, these tools will enable a fun extension to a rhythm composition project in which students create rhythms in groups based on their first names.\r\n\r\nStudents were thrilled when they first received these instruments, and always look forward to using these fun instruments in a variety of ways in the music curriculum. The students and I love the lighting. With this grant, 2 lamps I place in corners and twinkle lights I hung from the ceiling give a calming ambiance to my ELA classroom. Students love the \"cool\" vibe this lighting, with my 2 large windows and the lights turned off provide. Students come from their science class and the lighting sets a calming tone for the start of our ELA class. It has helped also with limiting big feelings leading to big behaviors. Reading and writing isn't everyone's strength and the calming lighting helps put everyone at ease and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nThe largest portion of the budget went to light grey bookcases. Along with the black bins purchased, they provide excellent organization for students to keep their workbooks and novels within reach. I've carefully labeled each one to help keep all 100 students in 4 different homerooms organized. On top of the bookcases are supply totes which hold our daily needed supplies. This grant provided 24-sets of highlighters with bags to keep them organized and an abundance of post-it notes students love to use in their readers notebook and reading/writing workbook. \r\n\r\nWe are so grateful to have a calming classroom. Four sections of fifth graders walk through my door throughout the day. They said is was a good mixture of a good story and humor. For a few of the students, it was their first experience reading a play which is a unique way of reading. They definitely got the hang of it and can't wait to read the second play, \"The Sloths and the Ogre.\"\r\n\r\nStoryworks magazines offer mix of fiction and nonfiction texts. Next week, students will be writing an opinion essay. There is a debate in the magazine that we will be using. The topic is \"Outdoor Play vs. Video Games.\" I'm expecting some strong opinions on this debate.
