My students complete their art projects at different times. Some kids work very slowly and some take much longer to perfect their projects. And, the drawing tablets are a favorite among the little kids i teach. Your generous donation has made it possible for my students to have their own copy of The Giver. My students love to read. They will devour books and I am always looking for ways to keep them engaged while challenging their thinking. My goal is to get creative with the novels we have and to teach students to think independently about topics that might not have an easy answer.\r\n\r\nThe Giver is one of those novels that makes students think. Students not only do in depth character analysis when reading this, but also examine society, its rules and debate the merits of a utopia v. dystopia. This starts with explaining what these two types of societies look like. We then compare Jonas's world to the one we currently live in. Students have to think not only about the community they live in, but the world as a whole. We spend a few weeks listing pros and cons of each. Students have to pick a side and then debate the merits of both.\r\n\r\nHaving these supplemental materials will allow me to customize work to students at their level; I can provide support to those that need it and also give enrichment to the students that need to be challenged. This event is a big deal for our school community, and having the proper attire made all the difference. The students had been practicing since January, and the outfits helped bring the performance to life. One moment that stood out was when the girls twirled during their dance—the skirts flowed beautifully and really elevated the whole experience. You could see their confidence grow the moment they put them on.\r\n\r\nThey were overjoyed! Up until then, they had been practicing with skirts meant for younger children, which barely reached their knees. When they received the new outfits, they couldn't stop admiring them and trying them on. One student said, \"Now I finally feel like I'm really in the dance!\" They especially loved how flowy the skirts were when they turned—it made them feel proud and excited to perform.\r\n\r\nSeveral of the girls shared that they can't wait to perform again—they're already thinking about new music, choreography, and how to use the skirts in even more creative ways. Dancing has been such a rewarding experience for them, both culturally and emotionally, and I'm so happy to have helped make that possible. The new outfits were more than just costumes—they brought confidence, excitement, and a sense of pride to our performance. Our classroom set of headphones has been a huge hit. The number one thing the students have commented on is the comfort of the headphones. Because they have noise canceling qualities, some students with special needs have chosen to wear them during independent work as well, simply to help them focus. \r\n\r\nNow that I have a full class set of headphones, I am able to create assignments for class where students need to listen to something independently. This past week we started talking about feminism, and the students were able to listen to a podcast about feminism for kids and answer questions at their own pace, going back and relistening to parts of the podcast when necessary.
