My students are loving the new resources. I did an SEL activity where my Junior AVID students were writing a \"My Story Is...\" poem of themselves and it had to be accompanied with a painting. The students used the markers and the canvases to create their paintings. I also had another class period (Freshman ELA) use the canvases to paint with a partner in a \"Partner Interview\" activity, where they would swap the painting every 5 minutes and ask each other interview questions.\r\n\r\nThey were surprised when they saw the material because the classroom became more vibrant and comfy when they say the new notebooks, markers, and the bean bags. I passed out pastel notebooks, and some students said, \"This is my favorite color!\" They use these notebooks daily.\r\n\r\nAt the end of the year, I plan to create another lesson with my last class (my other Freshman ELA class) where they will create a \"My Story Is\" Poem using memories from this 9th grade year. They will accompany the poem with a painting, where they will use either paint or the acrylic markers. I want them to end the year off with a \"feel good\" project that involves writing, reflecting, and thoughtful sharing.","fullyFundedDate":1759198909184,"projectUrl":"project/strengthening-sel-and-sense-of-belonging/9772500/","projectTitle":"Strengthening SEL and Sense of Belonging","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Sadang","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8716958"},{"teacherId":9611638,"projectId":9701854,"letterContent":"While many of our donors use technology at home, tools like a classroom printer make a huge difference in how learning happens at school. Having reliable access to a printer allows me to quickly provide students with reading guides, graphic organizers, annotation pages, and differentiated materials that support all learners. Instead of waiting or going without, students have what they need in their hands right away — which keeps lessons moving and engagement high.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for students has been the ability to have their own printed materials. They love being able to annotate directly on texts, track evidence on printed charts, and use their new bookmarks to keep track of important passages. It may seem simple, but having tangible tools makes reading feel more interactive and personal.\r\n\r\nI've especially noticed students who struggle with organization or focus benefit from this technology. Having clear, printed resources helps them stay on track and feel more confident. What might seem like small tools have made a big impact in helping students feel prepared, supported, and ready to learn each day.","fullyFundedDate":1757772997539,"projectUrl":"project/printing-success-in-color/9701854/","projectTitle":"Printing Success in Color!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Zama","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9611638"},{"teacherId":9611638,"projectId":9771991,"letterContent":"Because of your generosity, my students now have access to high-interest, engaging texts that are transforming the way they experience reading in our classroom.\r\n\r\nWhile many of our donors love reading (we do too!), teaching literature involves so much more than simply finishing a book. These new texts allow us to explicitly teach critical thinking skills such as analyzing character development, identifying theme, tracking plot structure, evaluating evidence, and making inferences. Students are learning how to annotate meaningfully, cite textual evidence to support their claims, and engage in thoughtful discussions where they respectfully challenge one another's ideas. We also use the books to strengthen writing skills—students craft analytical paragraphs, build arguments, and practice organizing their thinking clearly and effectively.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. You won't see students passively turning pages. Instead, you'll see them tracking suspects, debating motivations, mapping timelines, highlighting key passages, and filling out evidence charts. Sometimes we read aloud together to model fluency and analysis. Other times students read independently or in small groups, pausing to ask questions, make predictions, and connect the text to historical events and real-world issues. The room often buzzes with conversation as students test their theories and defend their interpretations.\r\n\r\nSome of my most reluctant readers have been especially impacted. Students who previously avoided reading are now eager to share predictions and point out clues they've noticed. One student who rarely volunteered earlier in the year now confidently leads discussions about character motives. Another who struggles with focus has become deeply engaged when tracking details and piecing together evidence. Watching students who once doubted their reading abilities become confident, thoughtful participants has been one of the most powerful outcomes of this project.\r\n\r\nYour support has not only placed books in students' hands — it has helped build confidence, critical thinking, collaboration, and a genuine love of reading. After their meal, they complete a written reflection connecting their personal food choices to bigger ideas like food imports, risk, and food sovereignty, and then share their findings through a short digital presentation. This will lead to a larger project and lesson on the future of Hawaii's sustainable agriculture infrastructure. \r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the project sheet and realized they would be tracking everything they eat for a week and then cooking or eating a local‑ingredient meal, the room immediately filled with questions and excitement. Many were surprised at how much of their usual plate lunch or snacks likely come from outside Hawaiʻi, and several started comparing which local ingredients their families already use at home. The promise of getting to eat their \"assignment\" made even some of my more reluctant learners eager to participate and talk about where their food comes from.\r\n\r\nNext, my students will move from personal reflection to community‑level thinking by analyzing their meal reports together to look for patterns in how often local foods show up in their diets. They will revise their written reflections to clearly explain at least one reason why relying so heavily on imported food can be risky for Hawaiʻi, and how choosing a local ingredient is one small example of food sovereignty in action. Finally, they will present their digital projects to the class, which will help them practice speaking and give our donors a clearer window into how these resources are helping students connect Hawaiian history and present‑day issues around food, land, and resilience.","fullyFundedDate":1759416867171,"projectUrl":"project/sprouting-a-sustainable-future-in-ewa-be/9773779/","projectTitle":"Sprouting a Sustainable Future in Ewa Beach","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Nakama","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10293806_orig.png?crop=1225,1225,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1759179943017","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10293806"},{"teacherId":7939860,"projectId":9775914,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generous support, our programs cannot continue without consistent yearly donations that allow the tools and materials we need to reach student hands. They first created a series of 10 prints using a variety of materials such as string, plant leaves, wood shapes, forks, cut-out shapes, and paint to create unique patterns and textures. This process encouraged exploration, problem-solving, and creative risk-taking. Once the prints were complete, students selected their strongest pieces and applied them to decorate 3D letters they constructed out of cardboard, combining printmaking with sculpture and design.\r\n\r\nStudents were immediately excited and curious when they first saw the Gelli plates. Many had never worked with printmaking tools before and were eager to experiment and learn how the plates worked. Their curiosity quickly turned into focused engagement as they tested different materials and techniques to see how each one affected the final print.\r\n\r\nNext, students will reflect on their printmaking process and evaluate which techniques were most successful. They will continue refining their 3D letter sculptures by focusing on craftsmanship, composition, and color harmony. As a next step, students will apply what they learned from the Gelli plate process to develop more intentional designs, encouraging them to plan, revise, and make creative choices with purpose. This project will also lead into future lessons on mixed media and surface design, building on the skills and confidence gained through these new materials.\r\n\r\nWe are grateful for the donors for supporting and giving students access to high-quality art materials that expand creative opportunities for our students.
