We are a small rural school of around 650 7th-12th grade students. While this creates a unique ohana (our strongest and most cherished quality) it brings us the unique challenges of a small school. We are very limited in resources, but do the best we can to give these kids as many opportunities for success as possible. With enrollment down, partly due to the competition with various charter schools, our funding is even more limited. I was asked to teach 11th grade Expository Writing and American Literature and rose to the challenge of a new curriculum. However, I came to find out (after the school year started) that there are no class sets of novels! I spent the summer reading different American novels that I think most of my students will enjoy. The three selected titles are Catcher in the Rye, The Great Gatsby, and The Joy Luck Club. We do have enough copies of The Joy Luck Club, but we don't have nearly enough copies of the others to make a class set.
