Sound (decibel) levels in both concert and marching band often reach levels deemed “hazardous” by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). A single trumpet can produce sounds up to 114db–enough to permanently damage hearing in less than two minutes. Individuals rarely play this volume in rehearsal, but a group of students can exceed NIOSH-recommended levels on a regular basis. This health issue is amplified further when playing in rooms that have not been acoustically treated. Pandemic social distancing forced us to expand our rehearsals beyond our own band room and into rooms not meant to house wind and percussion instruments. The acoustic panels in this proposal will help our students participate safely in our band classes.
