Over the last two weekends, we experienced a major disaster that left many of our families without power for an extended period. Countless households had to discard everything in their refrigerators and freezers—a heartbreaking loss, especially for families already stretching to make ends meet. In moments like these, your support became even more vital.\r\n\r\nYour protein bars have been a lifeline. Students were sharing ideas, writing together, and enjoying their snacks at the same time. It created a calm, happy atmosphere where students felt comfortable participating and staying engaged in the lesson.\r\n\r\nHow did your students react when they first saw the materials?\r\nWhen the students first saw the snacks and food items, they were extremely excited and grateful. Many of them smiled, clapped, and immediately said thank you. Some students shared that having a snack during the day helps them concentrate better and feel more ready to learn. It was wonderful to see how something simple like a snack could boost their mood and motivation in the classroom.\r\n\r\nWhat are the next steps for your students on a current classroom lesson or project?\r\nMoving forward, we will continue using the snacks to support focused learning during our reading, writing, and small group activities. Our next step is working on a collaborative classroom project where students will read short stories and create their own mini books. The snacks will help ensure students have the energy they need to stay focused while planning, writing, and illustrating their stories. We're excited to continue building a positive learning environment where students feel happy, supported, and ready to do their best work.","fullyFundedDate":1771710185438,"projectUrl":"project/healthy-snacks-healthy-minds/10109042/","projectTitle":"Healthy Snacks Healthy Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Loayza","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8979897"},{"teacherId":10297475,"projectId":9888180,"letterContent":"I want to extend my sincere gratitude for your generous donation to our organization. Some were even disappointed to encounter math in a culinary course. However, I realized I could make math more engaging by connecting it to a real purpose—a small snack shop. Students began seeing fractions on worksheets, on magnetic fraction wheels, and through hands-on food measurement using dry and liquid measuring cups as they measured flour, sugar, and water. We played collaborative games where students placed magnetic money on boards to calculate change—for example, $5.00 - $3.25 = $1.75. In another game, students found equivalent measurements using the magnetic fraction wheel. The ultimate goal was creating a little snack shop where students could apply customer service skills and math skills in a realistic scenario. Within this unit, students who had previously resisted math became more focused and engaged. They enjoyed the games and saw the relevance of applying math to real-world situations. They wanted to try hard and improve their math skills because it mattered now. They wanted to manage money because they were actually managing money. The magnetic boards kept materials organized while providing visible progress, and peer-to-peer transactions created authentic accountability that transformed how students engaged with mathematical thinking. Students who had internalized shame about their math abilities suddenly found themselves in positions of \"being able to do\".\r\n\r\nWhat strikes me most is how dramatically student motivation changed when math connected to something they genuinely cared about. For disadvantaged learners, traditional grades and abstract achievement had never motivated them, but the possibility of purchasing snacks or working as a successful cashier engaged them. This experience forced me to reconsider my assumptions about my students. Many were not unmotivated, they were unmotivated by the way math was being delivered. When math became purposeful and connected to their daily lives, motivation emerged naturally. As we prepare to launch our classroom restaurant project, I am convinced that transformative education happens when we connect abstract concepts to concrete experiences and position all students as capable contributors. I have learned that the smallest details matter: the magnetic boards, the fraction visuals, and the peer interactions all create conditions where struggling students experience genuine success and rewrite their identities from \"bad at math\" to \"capable business owner.\"","fullyFundedDate":1759419912160,"projectUrl":"project/developing-math-skills-in-the-culinary-c/9775114/","projectTitle":"Developing Math Skills in the Culinary Classroom!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. K","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8366623"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_50874","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2094,"numTeachers":137,"percentFrplEligible":53,"percentAsian":53,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":0,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":5,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.3:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":61.1,"schoolId":50874,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Governor Wallace Rider Farrington High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Governor Wallace Rider Farrington High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/hawaii/honolulu-school-district/w-r-farrington-high-school/50874"}
