Aloha, my students are from Hawaii. Most live in public housing. They are a mix of Pacific Islander, Filipino, Micronesian, Samoan, Tongan, and Chinese. Many of my students live right across the street and it is a tough neighborhood. Most of my students will start with this one book and want to read others. On average my students are below grade level readers and are worried they may not pass high school. My students are working on individual plans to decide their future. Not just a dream, but actual steps to get there. It is one thing to dream big but another to make it happen. Family plays a large role in their culture and we are trying to become an ohana, or second family, in our class. Our school is 75 years old and one of the biggest problems is that we have 3000 plus students in a very small space. It is hard to change yourself when few in your neighborhood succeed, but in our class they are trying hard.
