My students were so excited to receive the many boxes filled with items to help them learn more about different cultures and in making science and math connections. Students were able to create crafts using the materials received such as a koi and kabuto for boys day as they learned more about Japan. They were able to identify Japan on the map and and explore its traditions, clothing, food, language, and weather. Students were also able to compare school life in Hawaii and Japan. Students were also able to learn simple words in Japanese and also sang songs in Japanese. They were also able to identify similarities and differences between themselves and children in Japan. There is a deeper sense of respect when students learn about other cultures and the similarities \r\n\r\nStudents also enjoyed using the number path in solving addition and subtraction problems. Students will be using the number path, dots, and stickers to fill in a graph tracking the number of days of each weather type. The next steps will be to research the weather of a country and what kinds of homes people live in.Then students will complete an engineering design project in designing and building a home that fits the weather and culture of a country. We look forward to using the materials received to create their designs. Its going to be a lot of fun, all thanks to your kindness in allowing students to learn and grow as they study other countries.
