My students have been on both in-person and online learning last school year. These same students are returning to full-time in-person learning this year. The impact of being out of in-person school due to COVID-19 has set back many of my students, especially my ELLs and nonverbal students, from making progress on their speech/language goals.
To motivate all students to speak, increase engagement in language activities, and build confidence the iPads will be used for kids to video themselves speaking, to take pictures of things in their environment and then share it with peers and talk about it, and to use it as an Augmentative Communication Device – it will be their voice.
These “snapshots” of learning will then be added to the child’s digital portfolio to be regularly shared with parents. By seeing their child’s growth parents will be motivated to become more involved and engaged in their child’s learning, which was one of the good things that came out of being home – just spending time with their child. To further capture and support student learning and growth, staff will use the iPads to take digital data on student goals/objectives and be able to provide immediate feedback on student progress and adjust curriculum and programming quickly to address changing student needs. I do not currently have iPads for my classroom. Those assigned last year for distance learning needed to be returned and will not be shared with my preschoolers again. Having the kids use technology was so essential to their motivation and engagement which I want to continue.
