I have worked for a while to build a good classroom library filled with books that are culturally responsive. I want my 3rd grade students to be able to read books with characters that look just like them and have the same cultural worldview. My students in Honolulu are primarily Filipino, but we also have students from Hawaiian, Samoan, Marshallese, Chuukese, Tongan,Japanese and Chinese backgrounds. I would like a class set of Calvin Coconut: Hero of Hawai'i since the setting is on O'ahu, the island that we live on. Though I have spent thousands through the years on books for my classroom, I would like to be able to buy a larger set of books that reflect the cultures in my classroom so that we can make it a real focus of the curriculum in language arts. Thank you so much for making this possible for us!
