The students were so excited to receive so many new materials, especially the new stand-up whiteboards. Before this, they were working on individual boards that lay flat on their desks, which meant they could only work in pairs at the most. My students truly are the best and have so much natural curiosity. These tools are exactly what they needed to delve into more hands-on learning fun.\r\n\r\nStudents have already used the standing boards for our \"Building Thinking Classrooms\" lessons. Since we don't have much built-in whiteboard space, these tabletop versions have been a total game-changer. It's been so fun to watch them stand up, huddle together in small groups, and write down their ideas. Because the boards are so easy to erase, they aren't afraid to make mistakes or try a new strategy. Seeing them collaborate and talk through math problems with such confidence has been wonderful to see. \r\n\r\nThese resources are going to be used all year long. Soon we'll be breaking out the 120-mats as we dive into adding and subtracting larger numbers. Our new organizational tools will help to keep our math centers running smoothly. This necessary energy release simultaneously reduces minor non-compliance behaviors, such as fidgeting and tapping, leading to a significantly calmer and more cohesive learning environment for all.\r\n\r\nBy removing the physical barriers that impede focus, students are better positioned to absorb and process academic content. This improved concentration is expected to result in higher rates of assignment completion and improved formative assessment scores across all subjects. The SEL playdough mats have become a staple during center time. They allow the students to express their feelings by creating faces that represent different emotions, helping them learn to identify and understand both their own feelings and those of their peers.\r\n\r\nWe also use the adorable stuffed bunny rabbits to support conflict resolution. When a disagreement arises, one student holds the bunny to signify that they are the listener, giving the other student space to share their feelings and experiences. Then they switch, allowing both students to feel heard and respected. This practice has empowered our little learners to communicate their emotions and learn empathy in a safe and supportive way.\r\n\r\nThese resources, made possible by DonorsChoose, have truly made a significant impact on our classroom. This was the first step in being able to build a \"Thinking Classroom\". I attended a professional development conference where Peter Liljedahl was the keynote speaker. His strategy of getting students up and out of their desk, to work collaboratively to facilitate learning was revolutionary. \r\n\r\nMath is easily the least favorite subjects of students in my experience. It's hard to sit and pay attention to something they are not necessarily invested in. It's even worse if they are just given worksheets to complete for the sake of doing work. By giving them a way to learn the same content, but in a collaborative way that gets their whole body moving, it becomes more enjoyable. Not only is it a little more fun, but groups can offer other groups feedback, and it's easier to display their work. \r\n\r\nMy students were so excited when they saw gigantic boxes being delivered to my room! They love that they get to use a fancy expo pen, and take turns writing. Most of all, they love that they can show off their work in a large space.
