The pens and calculators have become essential parts of our daily classroom routine, and my students truly appreciate having access to these resources.\r\n\r\nThe pens have had an especially positive impact on the students' guided notes. Algebra 1 requires students to follow several steps, identify important vocabulary, recognize patterns, and clearly organize their work. The different pens allow students to separate examples, definitions, formulas, important reminders, and problem-solving steps. Their notes are now more organized, visually appealing, and easier to review when they are preparing for quizzes, tests, and the Algebra 1 End-of-Course assessment.\r\n\r\nThe students have become so accustomed to using the pens that they immediately look for them if I do not pass them out at the beginning of the lesson. They will ask, \"Ms. Lee, where are the pens?\" because the pens have become part of the learning process for them. I love seeing their excitement about completing guided notes. Something as simple as having a quality pen has encouraged students to take greater pride in their work. They are more willing to write down examples, correct mistakes, highlight important information, and keep their notes organized.\r\n\r\nThe pens have also helped students become more responsible for their learning. Instead of treating guided notes as another worksheet, many students now view their notes as a resource that belongs to them. They refer back to previous lessons when they need help and use their completed examples to solve new problems. This has helped them become more independent and confident in Algebra 1.\r\n\r\nThe calculators have made an equally important impact. Before receiving these calculators, students sometimes wanted to use the calculators on their phones. Allowing phones to be used, even for academic purposes, can quickly create distractions. Students may receive notifications, check messages, open social media, or move away from the assigned task. Now, students have access to the calculators they need without relying on their phones.\r\n\r\nHaving classroom calculators allows students to remain focused on the mathematics. They can check calculations, work through multi-step problems, and complete assignments without unnecessary interruptions. The calculators also help protect instructional time because students do not have to search for a calculator, share one with several classmates, or wait for someone else to finish using one. Students can begin their work immediately and remain engaged throughout the lesson.\r\n\r\nThese resources have helped create a more structured and productive classroom environment. The pens encourage organization, participation, and pride in guided notes. The calculators reduce distractions and give students the tools they need to complete Algebra 1 assignments successfully. As soon as the boxes arrived, my students gathered around the materials with excitement, carefully opening the mask bases, fabric squares, beads, and measuring tools like they were precious artifacts. Within minutes, rulers and protractors were in use as students began sketching symmetrical mask designs on graph paper, debating angles, lines of reflection, and geometric patterns. One student proudly said, \"I didn't know math could look like this,\" while another carefully measured repeated shapes to make sure both sides of her mask were perfectly balanced. Watching them connect symmetry, fractions, and patterning to African artistic traditions was a powerful moment that showed them STEM is not separate from culture, it is part of it.\r\n\r\nStudents are using the Ankara fabric squares to study pattern, translation, and rotation while also researching the cultural meanings behind the prints. They planned their designs mathematically first, then engineered their masks using measured sections, layered shapes, and precise placement of embellishments.
