Because of your support, our classroom received an **Elgato Stream Deck** and **3D printer filament dryers**. While these tools might sound specialized or technical at first glance, they have transformed our everyday learning environment in profound ways.\r\n\r\nMany people know 3D printing as a fun technology, but they might not realize how delicate the process actually is. 3D printing plastic (filament) acts like a sponge—it absorbs humidity from the air, which causes print failures, brittle parts, stringing, and constant hardware jams. The **filament dryers** store and bake out that ambient moisture. Learning how material properties affect real-world outcomes is a core engineering concept. Thanks to the dryers, our students spend less time troubleshooting failed prints and more time actually designing, testing, and bringing their physical prototypes to life.\r\n\r\nMeanwhile, the **Stream Deck**—a customizable visual control pad with physical LCD buttons—has turned our workstation setup into a professional command center. Students use it to trigger multi-step design software shortcuts, switch camera views during project presentations, and run automated routines with a single press. It abstracts away frustrating software menus so students can focus entirely on active creation and collaboration.\r\n\r\nWhat about the new products is most exciting to the students?\r\n\r\nFor the **Stream Deck**, students are thrilled by the immediate tactile feedback and professional feel. They love customizing the bright LCD keys with custom icons and programming macro sequences. It feels less like doing schoolwork and more like operating an industrial broadcast studio or a high-tech engineering hub.\r\n\r\nFor the **filament dryers**, the excitement comes from success and reliability. Before having dryers, a 10-hour print job might fail overnight due to moisture pop in the nozzle, causing immense disappointment. Now, seeing smooth, flawless prints come out of the machine on the first attempt gives students an enormous rush of pride and accomplishment.\r\n\r\nAre there particular students who have especially warmed to this new technology, and how so?\r\n\r\nTwo groups of students have thrived in particular:\r\n\r\n* **Our Tactile and Kinesthetic Learners:** Students who previously struggled with passive, screen-only tasks have lit up around the Stream Deck. The physical push-buttons give them a tangible connection to digital tools, bridging the gap between hardware and software in a way that regular keyboard shortcuts never could.\r\n\r\n* **Our Detail-Oriented \"Makers\" and Problem Solvers:** A few of our students who love taking things apart have adopted the filament dryers as their personal domain. They track ambient room humidity, test different filament types (like PLA vs. PETG), and manage drying times. They have taken full ownership of material preparation, acting like real-world materials engineers and lab technicians.\r\n\r\nYour contribution hasn't just brought tech into our room—it has elevated our classroom into a true hands-on laboratory where students build confidence, learn from real engineering workflows, and turn abstract ideas into real physical inventions.\r\n\r\nFrom all of us, thank you for making this possible!","fullyFundedDate":1789315054610,"projectUrl":"project/put-the-learning-in-the-students-h-hands/10632254/","projectTitle":"Put the Learning in the Students h Hands.","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Lininger","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4942108_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1509454427303","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mr-lininger"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_46436","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2221,"numTeachers":94,"percentFrplEligible":90,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":15,"percentWhite":37,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":38,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":3,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"23.6:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":74.7,"schoolId":46436,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about South Lake High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"South Lake High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/florida/lake-county-school-district/south-lake-high-school/46436"}
