Math is very legibly everywhere and children can and do engage in mathematical thinking throughout the room and throughout the day. \r\n\r\nThe Knock Down Number Challenge is a gem of a game. We practice turn-taking, spatial language (where did the bean bag land?), spatial reasoning - symbolic representation (draw an \"x\" to show where it landed using this map), numeral recognition (what'd you hit?), addition (you hit two?!? - how many is that all together?), organizing data (who's first, who's second, who's third?; make a tally mark to show what number you got - which number was hit the most, least?), and so on. This game is a permanent piece that is not rotated out - we just keep finding new ways to leverage the game for more learning.\r\n\r\nThe number sliders keep all children engaged in small learning clubs - everyone can slide the arrow to show their answers so everyone has a turn at once (maximizing learning time with NO waiting!) I leave these in various centers as well, and children use these to communicate math ideas, to add when they need to check their own math, or to find a numeral by counting up the line.\r\n\r\nThe giant shapes make teaching about the lines and faces of these shapes possible because they can see and touch them as we learn. In blocks and in the water center, it gives children more opportunities to use mathematical language to name and describe shapes. \r\n\r\nTeaching math is easier, learning math is more fun.
