When I opened the boxes the kids were so excited — lamps went straight up, flexible seats were claimed in seconds, and the whiteboards and fidgets were in use before I could finish unpacking. It's great to see them utilize the headphones and whiteboards to work independently on assigned work on the computer, or classwork. \r\n\r\nWe're using everything every day: lamps make our reading nooks cozy and help students focus, flexible seating lets kids choose where they learn best, fidgets support self-regulation during independent work, and the whiteboards keep partner practice fast and low-stakes. It's incredible to watch a student fidget in their chair and offer them multiple solutions, rather than the typical \"sit still\" response they have grown accustomed to. The snake fidgets push each student towards personal responsibility -- i typically only let them use it with me, and occasionally let them keep it when I leave the room. They are so excited to return it to me, building and maintaining trust internally and externally. \r\n\r\nNext up we'll weave these tools into larger projects — using lamps and cozy spots for sustained reading, whiteboards for quick formative checks, fidgets during longer work periods, and football-based team challenges to practice collaboration and communication. I'm planning a quick student reflection so they can tell us what helps them learn most. During this module, I have been learning powerful strategies from courses like Trauma-Informed Teaching, Emotional Intelligence and Belonging, Mental Health in Schools, and Chair Yoga in Schools. Each class has given me new perspectives on how to help young children feel emotionally safe, academically engaged, and connected to one another. One of the biggest highlights for me has been learning practical ways to create a classroom culture rooted in belonging, where every student feels seen, valued, and supported by following the 7 principles of Trauma-Informed Teaching:\r\n\r\n1. Offer Clear Context and Framing,\r\n2. Create Reliability & Consistency,\r\n3. Use Invitational Language,\r\n4. Provide Options,\r\n5. Honor Choice and Voice,\r\n6. Listen and Respond Mindfully, and\r\n7. Close Out with Intention.\r\n\r\nThroughout this module, I have been learning specific tools that I've already started integrating into my daily practice. Strategies like the \"Peace Process,\" \"Two-Word Check-In,\" \"The Three Zones of Learning,\" \"Loving-Kindness Meditation,\" \"Appreciation Station,\" and various breathing and mindful movement routines have supported both my students' mental health and my own. I have also been learning new chair yoga sequences that are developmentally appropriate for young learners, and we've begun using them after transitions to help students reset their bodies and minds. These small, consistent practices have made a meaningful difference in helping my students regulate their emotions, communicate clearly, and feel more confident during learning.\r\n\r\nThis experience has strengthened my teaching, my leadership, and the sense of community in our classroom. Because of you, I am growing as an educator in ways that immediately and directly benefit my students. We've been using the materials during our morning meetings and after transitions, and the impact has been clear. Students love choosing a yoga card to guide our movement breaks, and the breathing balls have become one of their favorite tools for calming big feelings. We've also been integrating our yoga books and yoga cards into our ELA routines, including phonics and literacy. In addition, we've had monthly yoga sessions, and having the mats has made it much easier for all students to fully participate.\r\n\r\nThe fidget toys have also been incredibly helpful in supporting students' attention during my Guided Reading lessons in Needs-Based Small Groups. They love using the squishy balls as part of our phonological awareness and phonics routines. For example, they use the balls to \"smash\" the letter that represents the sound I dictate, or to tap and smash each sound as they segment the phonemes in a word. Reading CVC words has become so fun with these fidget materials!\r\n\r\nAs we continue building this practice throughout the year, these resources will support our ongoing work in emotional regulation, focus, and community building.
