My class and I have joined the #classroombookaday challenge! This challenge was started by Jillian Heise with a goal to read aloud a picture book every day of the school year, to students at ANY grade level. By the end of this school year my scholars will have been exposed to 180 different books! These texts are shared to foster classroom community, sense of identity and a love of reading.
Data shows that children who regularly have books read to them, at any age, score higher on state and national literacy tests.
I want my students to find joy in reading, and I believe that being read to on a daily basis can help foster and build that joy! Being read to puts children in the frame of mind for learning and increases literacy achievement.
When scholars are represented within their classroom literature, they feel welcomed. Having a diverse and abundant library within the classroom will provide scholars a daily opportunity to expand their reading skills and develop empathy for others. I have compiled a list of culturally responsive books to share with my scholars. Having options and variety keeps scholars interested, curious and grow a love for reading!
Funding this project will afford my scholars exposure to 180 different titles; as well as, giving them the opportunity to see themselves in literature!
