We used the donated materials as part of our Tier 1 schoolwide approach to building community, strengthening relationships, and creating positive experiences for all students.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite parts of the project was watching students decorate their shoes in preparation for the Sneaker Ball. Because this was our second year doing the project, many of our students remembered it from last year and were excited that decorating their shoes had become a Sneaker Ball tradition!\r\n\r\nWhat made this project especially meaningful was seeing students realize that they did not need to purchase a brand-new pair of sneakers to participate. Students felt comfortable bringing shoes they already owned because they knew they would have an opportunity to personalize them and make them special. The materials helped remove some of the pressure students can feel around having something new for a special event. Instead, the focus became creativity, individuality, and having fun together.\r\n\r\nThe students were excited when they saw all of the decorating materials and immediately began thinking about how they wanted their shoes to look. It was wonderful watching them share ideas, compliment one another's designs, and take pride in what they created.\r\n\r\nYour support helped us create more than a fun activity—it helped us create a tradition where our students could feel confident, included, and excited to celebrate together. The materials from this project have helped create a classroom where students can see themselves reflected in their learning and engage with diverse stories, historical figures, and play experiences throughout the year. When the materials arrived, my kindergarten students were immediately excited to explore the books, art supplies, and culturally relevant play materials. Many students eagerly pointed out characters and community helpers who looked like themselves, their families, and people they know.\r\n\r\nOne of our favorite projects was learning about influential Black leaders, artists, inventors, and athletes through read-alouds, discussions, and hands-on activities. Students used the materials to create artwork, engage in dramatic play, and make connections between the stories we read and their own lives. These experiences sparked meaningful conversations about identity, community, perseverance, and kindness. The resources helped make these lessons more engaging and accessible for all learners.\r\n\r\nAs we continue learning and growing, students are using these materials to build literacy skills, strengthen oral language, and explore the world around them through play and inquiry.
