Your generosity gave my students far more than another book to read. Radium Girls gave them the opportunity to connect deeply with a true story about courage, injustice, and the pursuit of justice. Following Grace Fryer, Catherine Donohue, Mollie Maggia, and the other dial painters, students saw how young women who believed their work was safe were ultimately forced to fight for accountability after becoming seriously ill from radium exposure. As we watched Grace pursue legal action and Catherine continue fighting despite her declining health, we returned again and again to one important question: What should you do when the people in power refuse to admit they have hurt you? That question led to some of our most meaningful conversations about courage, responsibility, and justice.\r\n\r\nThe book also became an incredible vehicle for strengthening students' comprehension skills. Students identified themes by tracing the women's experiences throughout the story, debated the motivations of characters and company officials, used context clues to understand unfamiliar vocabulary, predicted outcomes as the women's legal battle unfolded, and identified cause-and-effect relationships between the women's work, their illnesses, and the company's actions. Through project-based learning and Socratic seminars, students were required to support their interpretations with evidence from the text. They learned that strong readers don't simply understand what a text says. They question it, discuss it, and use evidence to develop their own ideas. What began as a reading lesson often became a much larger conversation about fairness, power, and what people owe one another.\r\n\r\nThis experience was particularly meaningful to me because I had the opportunity to be part of a production of Radium Girls. Being able to share that personal connection with my students made our reading and discussions feel incredibly special. I watched students become emotionally invested in Grace, Catherine, Mollie, and the other women and begin making connections between the injustices in the book and issues of social justice in the world around them. Many students left the unit genuinely interested in social justice, which was one of the most rewarding outcomes I could have hoped for. They began to understand that literature can help us develop empathy, question systems of power, and recognize when something is not right.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this experience possible. Your donation helped me create a classroom where students could become stronger readers while also becoming more thoughtful, empathetic, and engaged young people. I hope they remember more than the comprehension strategies they practiced. I hope they remember the courage of the Radium Girls and the importance of speaking up when something is unjust. Nine different items went into each bag to fill a variety of sensory needs.\r\n \r\nWe then delivered them to our K-2 friends in two different classrooms. Giving to others is one of the best ways to make one's own heart feel happy :) I am grateful that my first graders were able to share these gifts of happiness and friendship with their peers.\r\n\r\nOur friends immediately started opening their bags and playing with the different sensory items. Both my first graders and their friends spent time enjoying, teaching, and learning about the different items.\r\n\r\nDouble thanks for allowing us the gift of giving and allowing our friends to receive. My kids this year like to explore everything and what better way than to provide them with safe and fun opportunities to touch all different types of materials!\r\n\r\n\r\nSo far, we've explored water, kinetic sand, rice and silly putty! This week we will learn all about pumpkins. After we carve our classroom pumpkin, we will use our sensory tables for the students to see and touch the different parts of a pumpkin. When the weather warms up again, we can even use the sensory tables outdoors. It's simply the best! It's got so many functions, and we continue to find more ways to use it. We love that it's magnetic and can display our laminated learning tools on it with just a small magnet on the back. We also use the large rings to hold our easel paper where we do many whole group projects, including dotting and painting.\r\n\r\nThe easel is the center of our morning meeting. We use the small ledge to hold our individual photos, as well as to hold the big books we've been reading daily. It's so multipurpose! On the back side of the easel, there is \"lined paper\" on the white board. Soon, we will begin to use this side to practice tracing our letters and names. There's even a shelf to hold all of our morning meeting supplies. \r\n\r\nWe can't wait to learn and grow with the help of our easel.
