We started off with the autopsy where they had to get familiar with just handling the rats as they determined the second cause of death followed by the naming of the major muscles. When we went into the abdominal cavity that is when students got an idea of how digestion occurs followed by absorption of the nutrients into the bloodstream. They continued into the oral and thoracic cavity for respiration and circulation and ended with the excretory system.\r\nStudents leveled up for this and it showed on their practical exam. I made this test worth a lot so students would have the motivation to really learn the content especially since it was relevant to how their own bodies worked. \r\nThe average on their exam was 85.6%! They did step up and one class had four perfect papers--I was so proud of all of them! The fact that it is a bass with only four strings also makes its appeal greater. \r\n\r\nStudents can pick up this instrument and after a couple of getting familiar with how to roll your fingers over the string can be playing simple bass lines in under twenty minutes. It is so easy to get hooked on this instrument. I still love seeing the faces of my students when they turn on the UV light to visualize the DNA fragments. The digested DNA that they so carefully loaded into the wells and then running it through the e-gels is such a great hands-on activity that gives them a genuine sense of forensics science.\r\n\r\nEven though every lane of the gel may not show up with DNA there is a real sense of pride when they are able to match up suspect DNA with the crime scene DNA. I'm still relatively new to the whole 3-D printing thing so I've only printed a couple of novel solid pieces and haven't done the multiple-piece prints of the heart that will be able to allow students to look inside and study the flow of blood through the chambers, but we are entering our anatomy/physiology unit now so I will be printing them shortly. \r\nI didn't realize there is so much to learn about 3-D printing so I've had to put myself in my students' shoes by becoming the student and being in a place of discomfort. I remembered how difficult it is to ask for help when you don't understand something like when the prints failed and I was left with a huge amount of tangled filaments.
