I have built my curriculum around different reading theories that ultimately give students a framework for understanding and analyzing literature. Reluctant readers find doorways into reading that may not have been visible before. For the voracious readers in the room, they find new entry points into novels that expand their thinking. The first of these theories is called Reader Response. Students learn that reading is a two way transaction and they can use their experiences and emotions to interpret text. For their first essay, in which they explain how they made meaning, my students pick a book on their own. Having a large library in the classroom is essential to this process! Mine is pretty depleted after years of students borrowing books.
