My students are a very diverse group. We are the highest performing high school in one of the lowest performing school districts in Northern California. Some of our students come from affluent neighborhoods with professional parents. Many, however, come from neighborhoods where the families face daily challenges. A lot of my students have problems staying focused for long periods of time, and being on a block schedule, our classes run one hundred minutes. I find it really important to try to incorporate as many lab activities as possible to give them hands-on learning experiences. It is so valuable to have students look at actual living cells when we are studying cells in class.
