I began this initiative after noticing a growing gap between students who loved reading and students who felt disconnected from traditional texts. Many students, especially reluctant readers and English language learners, were not seeing themselves reflected enough in our collection. Manga offers a powerful way to bridge that gap by combining strong storytelling with visual support, making reading feel accessible, engaging, and relevant. Thanks to your generosity, these resources are now actively used across grade levels for independent reading, peer recommendations, and informal discussion. We are also using the books with our Japanese classes to incorporate learning about Japanese culture.\r\n\r\nWhen the new manga first arrived, student reaction was immediate and enthusiastic. Students gathered around the shelves, helped organize titles, and began reading right away. Many expressed excitement at finally seeing books that reflected their interests, while others asked thoughtful questions about different genres of manga. Best of all, more students are now identifying themselves as readers.\r\n\r\nBecause of this project, our next steps include integrating manga more intentionally into literacy instruction. Students are currently comparing narrative structure, theme, and character development between manga and traditional novels, and some are beginning creative projects such as writing their own short comics or analyzing visual storytelling techniques. Your support has not only expanded our collection—it has changed how students engage with reading and how they see themselves as learners. We are deeply grateful for the lasting impact you've made on our students.","fullyFundedDate":1762655932182,"projectUrl":"project/manga-mania/9789828/","projectTitle":"Manga Mania","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Xavier","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8995414_orig.jpg?crop=377,377,x140,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1680033097015","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8995414"},{"teacherId":9694526,"projectId":9876380,"letterContent":"I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for your generous donation of the hot plates and electronic balances to our classroom. Several of my students struggle to sit still and focus, and these stools have been a game-changer. \r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw everything, their reactions were priceless. They were excited to try the wobble stools, instantly grabbed the fidget toys, and noticed right away that we had tissues and cleaning wipes available. Those small things might seem simple, but to my students, they signal that this is a space where they're cared for and respected. The podium was a surprise hit. I can now do my presentation while facing them directly.\r\n\r\nNext, we'll be using the podium for student-led discussions, presentations, and goal-setting reflections. The flexible seating and fidgets will continue to support focus, self-regulation, and confidence as students work through their lessons. While much of high school is learning a set curriculum and receiving grades for accomplishments in that curriculum, students also learn more informally all of the time through their own interests and questions. That is where having a current, interesting, and well-stocked library is so important. \r\n\r\nFurthermore, although students may take a course at a certain point in their academic journey, they might need information or inspiration at times other than when they have a teacher who can guide them. For example, we often have students looking at our Health books long after they have taken their freshman year Health class.\r\n\r\nThe books in this project range from the practical (Super Easy Teen Cookbook) to the historical (The Woman All Spies Fear) to the informative (The Economics Book). Hopefully, many students will find these books accessible and interesting and educational, and we can point students with questions to these new resources.","fullyFundedDate":1742920936020,"projectUrl":"project/nonfiction-for-learning-and-inspiration/8963556/","projectTitle":"Nonfiction for Learning and Inspiration","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Xavier","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8995414_orig.jpg?crop=377,377,x140,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1680033097015","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8995414"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4246","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2168,"numTeachers":104,"percentFrplEligible":8,"percentAsian":35,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":44,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":8,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"20.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":89.9,"schoolId":4246,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Monte Vista High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Monte Vista High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/san-ramon-valley-unified-school-district/monte-vista-high-school/4246"}
