The area of gross motor development in school and particularly at the preschool level is often overlooked and therefore, not provided for with federal, state, or district funding however, for our youngest, school-age population, the development of both static and dynamic gross motor skills - balance, strength, and coordination are the foundation for all other skills that these little ones need to learn. \r\n\r\nBy providing our class with these materials, you've made it more accessible for our students to have exposure to and practice with these gross motor movements. Our students truly enjoy and are curious at the sight of new materials and for staff to have tangible items to model for the children what to do and how to do it makes their imitation of these new skills more concrete and simply put, easier for everyone.\r\n\r\nA lovely bonus has been seeing the children blossom in the area of their social skills. Having watched how staff set up the materials, the children have taken it upon themselves to attempt setting up the obstacle courses and do so together as a shared and collaborative activity. In addition, they've naturally started to implement skills like: taking turns, waiting, and supporting each other through the tasks both verbally with words of encouragement and cheering or encouragement by physically helping by giving a hand to hold or moving materials closer together or lower to accommodate varying skill levels.\r\n\r\nThe overall impact of your gracious gift has been felt on so many levels by both staff and students, and the ripple effect this has on the families of our students as well as on the other skills that gross motor skills supports will be felt forever.\r\n\r\nThank you!","fullyFundedDate":1777058961101,"projectUrl":"project/functional-fun/10197178/","projectTitle":"Functional Fun","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Penny","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4015067_orig.jpg?crop=148,148,x0,y12&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729101562567","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4015067"},{"teacherId":4020780,"projectId":10271733,"letterContent":"Thank you for helping me offer my students with special needs appropriate cutting tools. For example, since only one side of the race track tiles have the necessary groove for the car to follow, students would often build a track where the car kept getting stuck. Now they know to feel for the groove and how to fix that themselves by turning it over. In addition, since flipping a curved track would change the direction of the curve, students have learned the spatial orientation skills related to both flipping and rotating. These might seem like small things, but developing that independence and perseverance is an achievement for UTK and kindergarteners as well as my special needs students. \r\n\r\nStudents have also used the materials to explore concepts such as building with squares or triangles. They love finding ways pieces fit together differently depending on whether they are all vertical or at an angle. They compete to see who can build the tallest structures without collapsing, and they make patterns using colors and shapes. Even cleaning up is a learning moment as they have to organize the pieces by color, shape, and quantity. \r\n\r\nThese materials have been fantastic both as the main learning tools for a lesson and also has an activity students can go to when they finish something early. Whether I direct them toward a specific challenge or whether they have the freedom to choose their own goal, they get to use their creativity and imagination, sometimes independently and sometimes in collaboration with peers. They are some of the favorite items in my classroom. I appreciate your donation making it possible to purchase these in quantities that satisfy classroom needs. They allow students to not only play music but also to compose, arrange, and record their own pieces using music software. This hands-on technology gives them real-time feedback and helps them understand music theory, rhythm, and harmony in a way that's interactive and fun.\r\n\r\nThe most exciting part for our students? They're creating their own music—sometimes for the first time ever. With the MIDI keyboards, they can layer sounds, experiment with different instruments digitally, and bring their musical ideas to life. Students who may not have felt confident reading traditional sheet music are now composing their own beats and melodies with enthusiasm and pride.\r\n\r\nWe've seen a number of students truly light up with this technology. One student, who had struggled to engage in class before, now comes in early just to work on his latest track. Another student, who is shy in group settings, found her voice through music and even shared her original song with the whole class. The keyboards have opened up new ways for all our students to express themselves and connect with music on a deeper level.\r\n\r\nThank you again for helping us bring 21st-century tools into our music classroom.
