Some of them break down key concepts we're working through in math and science, giving students a visual reference they can return to again and again as we build on skills throughout the year. Others are a series of STEM career posters that live on our walls to show students the wide range of paths a STEM education can open up. One of my favorite moments happened not long after we put the career posters up: I noticed a student slowly making their way down the row, reading each one, and then turning to me completely surprised. They said they had no idea there were so many different jobs connected to math and science — they'd always thought \"STEM career\" meant scientist or math teacher, full stop. That one conversation turned into a class discussion where students started calling out careers they recognized from the posters and asking questions about ones they didn't, which is exactly the kind of curiosity I was hoping these materials would spark.\r\n\r\nThat reaction wasn't unique to one student or one year. When the anchor charts first went up, there was a noticeable buzz in the room. Students who don't always engage with a lot of enthusiasm during transitions were suddenly up out of their seats, walking over to read the posters, pointing things out to each other, and asking me questions I hadn't anticipated. The concept charts got attention too — students started referencing them unprompted during independent work, pointing to a chart instead of asking me to re-explain something, which told me they were actually using them as tools rather than just décor. Having that kind of professional, colorful, permanent reference material in the room changed the feel of the space. It stopped being just a classroom and started feeling like a place built around the idea that math and science lead somewhere real and varied, which is a message I want my students absorbing all year long, not just during a single unit.\r\n\r\nThis year, I moved to teaching 6th grade, and I brought the anchor charts right along with me. I wasn't sure whether the STEM career posters would land the same way with a younger group, but they've sparked just as much curiosity — if anything, my 6th graders are even more wide-eyed flipping through the different careers, since many of them are encountering the idea of \"STEM jobs\" for the first time. As we settle into this school year, I'm planning to keep weaving the career posters into our units so students keep making connections between what they're learning in class and where it could take them someday. Your support didn't just fund a few posters — it gave my students, across two grade levels now, a daily, visual reminder that the math and science they're grinding through has real purpose and real possibility attached to it.
