Many donors share our love of reading and literature, but may not realize how powerfully these carefully chosen books support grammar instruction while sparking genuine excitement for stories. The Mentor Sentence approach uses standout sentences from real literature as models—rather than isolated worksheets or error-filled examples—to teach grammar skills in context. This lets students notice and discuss what makes a sentence effective: things like varied sentence structures, precise word choice, punctuation that adds rhythm and meaning (such as commas in complex sentences or dialogue tags), vivid verbs, descriptive phrases, and how authors build compound or complex sentences to express bigger ideas. By studying these authentic examples from the books you've helped provide, the children learn grammar rules naturally, see them in beautiful writing, and then apply them to improve their own sentences. The result is stronger, more confident writers who understand that grammar isn't just \"rules\"—it's the tool that helps stories come alive.\r\nThe children truly love this program because it brings literature right into our daily lessons in such an engaging way. During our Mentor Sentence time (usually 10-15 minutes a day), we read the selected sentence aloud from one of the new books, discuss what stands out (\"What do you notice about how the author used that comma?\"), label the grammar elements together, revise and imitate the sentence in our own words, and then create original sentences inspired by it. The kids get to dive into captivating stories—whether funny adventures, mysterious tales, or nonfiction wonders—while practicing skills that transfer directly to their writing. It's joyful and meaningful: no more dry drills, just real books guiding real learning. Their enthusiasm shows in how eagerly they volunteer observations, share their imitations, and beg to keep reading.\r\nThank you from the bottom of my heart—and from every excited 4th grader who now sees grammar as part of the magic of great books. Your support has made our classroom richer, our lessons more connected, and our students more inspired readers and writers. These books will continue to mentor them all year long, helping build skills they'll carry forward for years to come.","fullyFundedDate":1710863455435,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-mentor-sentences/8267735/","projectTitle":"Books for Mentor Sentences","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cuevas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3772999_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1508261836494","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-cuevas"},{"teacherId":3772999,"projectId":9597972,"letterContent":"I wanted to write you a special thank-you from the bottom of my heart—and from all 24 very happy 4th graders.\r\nWhen the couch and bean bag chair arrived last week, the room instantly felt different. The students' eyes grew wide, there were gasps and little cheers, and within about thirty seconds someone had already claimed the bean bag with the classic \"This is mine now!\" declaration. You could see the joy on their faces—it was like Christmas morning in the middle of January.\r\nBecause of your kindness and generosity, our classroom now has a beautiful, cozy reading corner that my students are actually excited to use. They've been taking turns curling up with books during independent reading time, partner reading, and even during our end-of-day quiet reading block. Several students who used to say reading was \"boring\" or \"too hard\" are now choosing to stay in the corner longer than the timer requires. That kind of change doesn't happen by accident—it happens because someone cared enough to make our space feel more like home.\r\nYour gift has given my students more than just comfortable furniture. It has given them a special place to slow down, imagine, learn, and feel safe and welcomed. In a busy school day filled with transitions, tests, and expectations, that comfy spot to read has become a little oasis for them.","fullyFundedDate":1763474755343,"projectUrl":"project/read-learn-and-relax/9597972/","projectTitle":"Read, Learn and Relax","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cuevas","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3772999_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1508261836494","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/ms-cuevas"},{"teacherId":5231712,"projectId":9514037,"letterContent":"Receiving an iPad for my math classroom has had a meaningful impact on my students' learning and overall engagement with mathematics. While many donors may use technology regularly at home, the way it supports instruction in a classroom setting may look very different. In our math classroom, the iPad serves as a learning tool that helps students better understand concepts, practice skills, and receive feedback in real time. Students use math apps and digital tools to explore problems visually, manipulate numbers, and model their thinking in ways that paper alone cannot provide. Concepts that once felt abstract, such as fractions, graphing, or multi-step problem solving, are now easier for students to understand because they can see and interact with the math. The technology also allows me to quickly assess student understanding and provide support when needed, helping lessons move at a pace that benefits all learners.","fullyFundedDate":1763474854815,"projectUrl":"project/think-bigger-bringing-a-thinking-classr/9514037/","projectTitle":"Think Bigger: Bringing a Thinking Classroom to Life","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Rico","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5231712_orig.jpg?crop=1280,1280,x0,y174&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1740003137139","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5231712"},{"teacherId":5231712,"projectId":9121958,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, my students have been able to engage with their learning in new and exciting ways! This trip allowed them to experience powerful stories of resilience and understand the dangers of intolerance firsthand.\r\n\r\nOne of the most memorable moments was the Holocaust exhibit, where students followed the journey of a child affected by World War II. Seeing history through a personal lens helped them grasp the real consequences of discrimination and hate. Many students expressed how eye-opening it was to witness the conditions people endured and left with a deeper appreciation for the freedoms they have today.\r\n\r\nAnother highlight of the visit was the interactive discussions led by museum educators. Students explored historical and modern examples of prejudice, drawing connections between past injustices and current social issues. These conversations inspired them to think about their own role in promoting kindness and inclusion.\r\n\r\nBack in the classroom, the learning continued. Students reflected on their experience, engaging in meaningful discussions about responsibility, empathy, and standing up against injustice. Some took the initiative to research more about the Holocaust, civil rights, and other movements, eager to understand the lasting impact of intolerance. Others shared personal experiences and brainstormed ways to create positive change in their own communities.\r\n\r\nThis trip was more than just a field trip—it was a transformative experience that helped our students see the importance of standing up for what is right. They left the museum with not only historical knowledge but also a renewed sense of responsibility to build a more just and compassionate world.","fullyFundedDate":1575348675934,"projectUrl":"project/museum-of-tolerance-tour/4585828/","projectTitle":"Museum of Tolerance Tour","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Rico","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5231712_orig.jpg?crop=1280,1280,x0,y174&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1740003137139","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5231712"},{"teacherId":5231712,"projectId":9104774,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generosity, our classroom has been transformed!
