Their faces lit up as they explored the materials and immediately began sharing ideas about what they could create. The new dramatic play and hands-on resources quickly became part of our daily learning. During one classroom project, students worked together to create their own pretend community. They took on different roles, used the materials to build and organize their space, and practiced communicating, taking turns, and solving problems together. It was wonderful to see their imaginations come to life while they were developing important social and academic skills.\r\n\r\nAs we continued using the new resources, students became more confident in exploring, creating, and sharing their ideas. They especially enjoyed working together and using dramatic play to develop stories and act out real-life experiences. Our next steps were to expand our classroom projects by encouraging students to design their own play settings, create stories, and explain their thinking to their classmates. We planned to connect these experiences to literacy, math, science, and social-emotional learning. The generosity of our donors gave our students meaningful opportunities to learn through play and discovery. We were incredibly grateful for their support and for helping make our classroom a more engaging and joyful place to learn.","fullyFundedDate":1760046689078,"projectUrl":"project/building-a-strong-tk/9608167/","projectTitle":"Building a Strong TK","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hale","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp997803_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1669752797909","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/gg1991"},{"teacherId":997803,"projectId":9573094,"letterContent":"Our DonorsChoose project made a tremendous difference in our transitional kindergarten classroom by creating a rich, hands-on learning environment where students explored, created, moved, and learned through play every day. At this age, children learned best when they were actively engaged, curious, and given opportunities to discover the world around them. The materials we received made these learning experiences more meaningful, joyful, and accessible for every student.\r\n\r\nWith the new art supplies, our students had opportunities to express their creativity by mixing colors, experimenting with textures, drawing, painting, and proudly sharing their masterpieces. These art experiences supported fine motor development while also encouraging self-expression, problem-solving, imagination, and confidence. Students learned that there were many ways to approach a project, make choices, and communicate their ideas through their creations.\r\n\r\nThe addition of outdoor play equipment also enhanced our students' physical development and social-emotional learning. Students had more opportunities to run, climb, balance, move, and develop coordination while engaging in active play. Just as importantly, outdoor play encouraged children to interact with their classmates, practice taking turns, communicate their ideas, and work together toward shared goals.\r\n\r\nIn our play-based classroom, every material became an opportunity for learning. Students practiced language and communication skills, developed independence, strengthened problem-solving abilities, and built perseverance as they explored new activities. These experiences helped create a classroom where children felt supported, capable, and excited to participate.\r\n\r\nThanks to the generosity of our donors, our TK students had access to materials that encouraged curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and joyful discovery. Your kindness has brought an overwhelming wave of excitement and joy to our early learners. As TK students, these children are just beginning their educational journeys, and the resources you provided are crucial for laying a strong foundation. Thanks to your support, our classroom library has been completely transformed into a vibrant, welcoming space filled with brand-new, high-quality board books. These sturdy pages are absolutely perfect for little hands that are still developing fine motor skills, ensuring that our new literary treasures will withstand years of eager reading, page-turning, and love.\r\nThe moment the boxes arrived and we unveiled the books, the room was filled with pure magic. The children were absolutely thrilled to see some of their favorite, beloved characters looking back at them. Having access to engaging stories like Grumpy Monkey, The Pout-Pout Fish, and an assortment of Disney classics has completely captivated their imaginations. These character-driven stories do so much more than just entertain; they are powerful tools that help our young students develop emotional literacy, learn how to navigate big feelings, and practice essential social-emotional skills. Seeing characters they recognize and love has made reading feel like a comforting, joyful adventure, instantly sparking an authentic love for books and storytelling that will stay with them for a lifetime.\r\nIn addition to these wonderful storybooks, your generosity allowed us to acquire an incredible collection of informational texts that align beautifully with our school curriculum. Our TK class dives deep into project-based studies, and having non-fiction books that directly connect to our units on Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Wheels, Clothing, and Buildings has taken our learning to the next level. These books have turned abstract concepts into concrete, tangible ideas for my students. When we study wheels, they can now look at vivid photographs of gears and tires; when we talk about recycling, they can see real-world examples of how materials are repurposed. Your donation has effectively bridged the gap between storytelling and scientific inquiry, fostering an early spirit of curiosity, critical thinking, and discovery. My fourth graders immediately started asking what the books were, sharing them with their friends, and asking when we were going to start reading them.\r\n\r\nI heard things like, \"IS THAT WONDER?! I CAN'T WAIT TO READ IT!!\" followed by, \"Have you seen the movie?\" Another student asked, \"Ms. Salazar, is that Holes, like the movie with the kids digging?\" I also heard, \"What's The Lemonade War? I can't wait to read it!\" and, of course, \"Which one are we reading first?\"\r\n\r\nSeeing their excitement before we had even read a single page was such a special moment for me as their teacher. These books immediately gave my students something to be curious about, talk about, and look forward to together.\r\n\r\nAs we read, my goal is for students to see books as more than something they have to read for school. We use our novels to practice important fourth grade skills such as making inferences, identifying theme, analyzing characters, discussing our thinking, and using evidence from the text to support our ideas. We also spend time talking with one another, making connections, asking questions, and sharing our reactions to what we are reading.\r\n\r\nI especially loved watching students recognize books they had heard about before and then get excited to finally experience the stories for themselves. Some students were already familiar with Wonder or Holes because they had seen the movies, while others were discovering these stories for the very first time. The Lemonade War immediately sparked curiosity because many students had never heard of it before.\r\n\r\nThank you to the donors who made this project possible. You didn't just give my students books — you gave them something to be excited about, something to talk about with their friends, and new stories that will help them grow as readers and as people.
