Each year our 8th grade science classes do a project about energy and friction. This unit addresses science standards in the NGSS curriculum and our students learn from it and are tested on it and the end of the school year on state standardized tests.\r\n\r\nNot only do they learn curriculum but they engage with each other in a fun hands on project. Project based learning is a scientifically proven strategy that increases student engagement and build positive self esteem. Our students work in teams and they all get to do different jobs within that team for the common goal of producing a project that meets the requirements of the build of a roller coaster but also to demonstrate their learning by calculating the speed of a marble to complete the course. The marbles are glass, metal, and wood so they can compare which marble is best suited for speed in the course.\r\n\r\nAlong with this the students learn through engagement what teamwork is through cooperative learning. Each team member must engage in the project for the project to be successful and show that learning has occurred and to achieve a high grade. The equipment has helped create a fun, structured environment where students can connect, stay engaged, and grow in confidence.\r\n \r\nOne of my favorite moments was during a recent lunchtime tournament when students worked together to form teams, assign roles, and support one another throughout the games. It was incredible to see how they celebrated each other's efforts—whether they won or lost. These tables have made it possible for students from different grade levels to engage in positive, structured activities during lunch, promoting inclusivity and a stronger sense of community.\r\n \r\nOne of my favorite moments was seeing a group of students use the new tables for our \"Kindness Station.\" They created friendship bracelets and wrote uplifting notes to classmates. It was heartwarming to watch them interact, laugh, and show genuine care for one another. The tables gave them a comfortable, inviting space to express themselves and build friendships.\r\n \r\nSince introducing these tables, I've noticed a positive shift in how students spend their lunchtime. Many look forward to joining the SEL activities and often invite others to participate. The tables have truly become a gathering point for creativity, connection, and kindness. It's inspiring to see students take ownership of this space, showing leadership and compassion as they collaborate and support each other.\r\n \r\nThese simple additions have made a lasting impact on our school community by fostering belonging and emotional growth. Our students are incredibly diverse from all over the world including from our beloved school community and the class is like a touchstone at our school- in the art building -and what feels like the heart of our school. These middle schoolers can't wait for the doors to open and head straight to their violins to begin playing. The sounds of their notes in the cool mornings just fills the room and the halls with such delightful joy and sweetness!\r\nEvery table has at least 2 violins now so there is no one that is being left out of the opportunity to practice. Students are excited to get to song #5, \"Oh Come, Little Children\" so they can take the violins home on weekends and holidays including over the summer. They are sure getting a lot of use. The 4 violins you donated really stand out as easily the most beautiful and well made instruments, and just today a little boy who is so smart he is writing music already- complained that his little shoulder hurt; but because of your generous donation we were able to stick a shoulder pad to the violin and he just kept playing!
