As a 7th grade English teacher, my goal was to build a library with diverse titles and genres. I have embedded daily independent reading into my curriculum. Students read for ten minutes per class period and then complete a quick reading log about important events or details about the characters in the book. This ten minute period helps students slow down and calm before we begin our lesson for the day. Students are then required to complete bi-monthly book report projects. The goal is for them to read, read, read!\r\nThe students have also greatly appreciated the diversity in book titles. Your donations have created a classroom library with genres such as fantasy, science fiction, realistic fiction, novels in verse, non-fiction and others. The students completed a book genre quiz based on the books and then chose a book which matches their interests. I have one student who was particularly grateful for the full Harry Potter collection. She had read the first four books and now she intends to read the remaining three titles in the series.
