It was crazy that the lights and ivy came in first. We were able to get them hung immediately, and the excitement started to build. As amazing as it sounds, they are taking turns caring for this space by cleaning and vacuuming! \r\n\r\nWhile the calming/reading corner project is designed to positively impact my sixth-grade students by creating a dedicated space for them to relax and focus, it is doing just that. The space was intended to reduce distractions, enabling students to immerse themselves in reading and improve learning outcomes. This powerful narrative, set against the backdrop of Sudan, allows students in our multicultural Southern California middle school to connect with universal themes of perseverance and hope, fostering a classroom environment where both shared experiences and individual differences are valued.\r\n\r\nThe dual narrative structure—featuring Salva, a \"Lost Boy\" refugee, and Nya, a girl seeking water is instrumental in building a deep sense of empathy. Students who come from various backgrounds, including those with personal or familial experiences of immigration or hardship, can see elements of their own realities reflected, while others gain a critical window into lives vastly different from their own. This mirror and window dynamic is essential for developing a global perspective.\r\n\r\nThrough engaged participation in Socratic seminars and readers' theater, students are improving their reading comprehension, critical thinking, and communication skills. The book's engaging and approachable nature has reinvigorated their interest in reading, demonstrating the value of literature in making global issues personal and relatable.
