The smiles and \"thank you's\" I have received are all thanks to you!\r\n\r\nMy students have felt more welcomed in my classroom in the moment that they realized that I am providing items for them to keep up with their hygiene on school campus. The students have said things such as \"this is so cool that you have this\" or \"not every teacher cares enough to provide for us\" after they have used items from the hygiene cart. The smiles on their faces have made this mission worth it. It is these small things that change the dynamic and experience of their high school lives. I have freshmen. They are shy and learning to navigate high school and meeting new people. With a sense of belonging due to this cart, they have bonded with other students who have used the cart in the same way! It is awesome. With a class set of Fahrenheit 451, every student now has access to their own copy of the novel, allowing them to read, annotate, discuss, and engage with the text in a meaningful way.\r\n\r\nAs we read, students will develop important reading and analysis skills, including annotation, identifying and analyzing theme, character development, figurative language, symbolism, and author's purpose. Rather than simply reading for comprehension, students will learn how to slow down, notice meaningful details, ask questions, make connections, and use evidence from the text to support their ideas.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom is an active experience. Students annotate as they read, participate in small- and whole-group discussions, collaborate with their classmates, and regularly return to the text to support their thinking. Fahrenheit 451 also gives us the opportunity to move beyond literary analysis and discuss real-world topics such as censorship and book banning, government control, freedom of thought, technology, and what it means to live in a society where people are discouraged from thinking critically.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting parts of this project is seeing students realize that a book written decades ago can still connect to questions and issues they recognize in the world around them. Students who may not initially consider themselves strong or enthusiastic readers can become especially engaged when they are given the opportunity to discuss controversial ideas, share their perspectives, and see their own experiences reflected in the themes of a story.\r\n\r\nBecause of our generous donors, my students aren't just receiving a book—they are receiving an opportunity to become thoughtful, curious, and confident readers.
