Rather, this is an explanation:\r\n\r\nThis impact letter was due on June 5, but I'm submitting this to you five days late.\r\n\r\nSee, my mother died on May 11. And my family and I celebrated her transition from this life to the next last Friday, June 5. The same June 5 that was set as the due date for this letter.\r\n\r\nI hope you can understand how these last few weeks have been difficult for me. I missed several days of work so I could travel out of state and be there with my mom as she entered hospice care. Then I had to take more days off to travel back to Seattle for her funeral. \r\n\r\nToday is the last day of our school semester and this impact letter was one of several loose ends I had to tie before Summer break. With that being said, I hope you forgive my tardy response...\r\n\r\nAs far as the impact your donation made, about 98% of my 150 12th graders used, and (hopefully) are still using the Journals you blessed us with.\r\n\r\nThey LOVED the small, personal size they could easily carry in their backpack. They LOVED the fact that they could personalize their Journals with designs, illustrations and other graphics.\r\n\r\nThose students who were already accustomed to keeping a diary excelled with this project. They were thrilled to receive a 60-page, college-ruled composition book where they could jot down their thoughts. They were writing regularly already, so, for them, this project was light work.\r\n\r\nBut the REAL impact was with the great majority of kids who were, at first, reluctant to participate. They simply didn't like to HAND write. They preferred sharing their thoughts digitally on a device. They preferred tapping keys. Handwriting is just soooo last century!\r\n\r\nYet they DID make the switch from digital to analog.\r\n\r\nThe journal forced them to use handwriting and, according to what I've read, they ALL enjoyed journaling. Many of them didn't quite fill all 60 pages of their writing book, yet they assured me they would do so eventually. \r\n\r\nIn fact MOST of my students said they enjoyed \"old school\" journaling so much that they vowed to continue doing so for the rest of their life! (Or, at least until they lose interest and go back to texting and commenting on social media posts...)\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your generosity. You gift will, I'm sure, have a lifelong impact on a number of young writers.","fullyFundedDate":1772733171339,"projectUrl":"project/we-learn-writing-by-handwriting-about-wh/10129349/","projectTitle":"We Learn Writing by Handwriting About What We're Learning","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Conard","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4835666_272x272.png?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1506472029023","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/lawndaleyearbook2018"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_27794","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1680,"numTeachers":113,"percentFrplEligible":68,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":22,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":68,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":3,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"14.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":76.1,"schoolId":27794,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Lawndale High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Lawndale High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/centinela-valley-union-hsd/lawndale-high-school/27794"}
