Students came into class daily asking if we were going to read, and became upset when we had to stop for the day. \r\n\r\nThe other part of Global Read Aloud is discussing the book with others outside of your school. That is what we did. We worked with a 6th grade class at the middle school and discussed the book weekly with them through an online platform. The students come in the morning and the school offer breakfast for all. This breakfast is delivered to our classroom. This is a wonderful time students to socialize. After observing students during the first quarter of the year, I noticed they needed some encouragement to break the ice with each other. So I wanted to offer some games, and \"toy\" to help easy the students into socialzing. And it worked! Students started playing games, building with Legos, playing with playdoh and students found some common ground to talk about. This sounds so simple, but now students who usually don't hang out together will during breakfast playing a game. Thank you so much for helping me give my students what they needed to socialize appropriately.","fullyFundedDate":1762189556082,"projectUrl":"project/morning-social-activites/9494816/","projectTitle":"Morning Social Activites","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Chilicky","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5434578"},{"teacherId":6727977,"projectId":9572473,"letterContent":"The students have been using our new gymnastics mats for our recent Gymnastics Unit! Multiple mats allow for more room to move!\r\n\r\nSome games we played after our Gymnastics unit, leading into Christmas, were Battleship (a throwing and teamwork game) and another favorite game is Zoo Keepers where the mats are used as a \"cage\" for the Zoo Keepers to help the animals stay safe!\r\n\r\nAlong with this past unit and multiple games we will continue to use our new mats throughout the Spring and beyond. One is a game that includes matching puzzles pieces to a photo of a chid's face showing a common emotion. This helps my students learn to recognize and label emotions based on facial features. It also helps with visual perception skills, so it's a doubly helpful game. I have found it has been useful for even middle school age students as well as the younger children.\r\n\r\nWith a group of boys who need to improve their social skills we have used a set of board games that are helping them learn about emotions and how to respond when they are experiencing emotions that are difficult to control. While playing the games they are also practicing taking turns, being supportive of others, and good sportsmanship. I will be using the games with another group of students soon.\r\n\r\nThank you for contributing to my project and helping these students. I have been able to create a lot of materials that are used with the students with special needs. \r\n\r\nOne of the attached photos tries to show a variety of the items I have made so far. They include adapted books that help students be more engaged as a book is read to a group. I make color copies of specific pictures from the book and laminate them and add Velcro to both the picture in the book and on the picture itself. When each page is read the student is able to add the picture to the location in the book on the correct page. I have also made \"put in boxes.\" These have a fun picture on the top of the box, such as a shoe box, with a hole to place objects or pictures. I have a barn and the student opens the barn door to place small plastic farm animals inside. I also made one with Cookie Monster to place laminated pictures of cookies in his mouth. Most recently during an arctic animal theme the students used tongs to put small plastic fish in the mouth of a polar bear. One of the other attached photos shows a visual schedule that has pictures of the steps for circle time. A student is also shown using one of many matching tasks that I have also been able to make. He is matching numbers to each card after counting how many crayons there are. \r\nThese are just some examples of items that I make for the students at school. I am able to make new books and tasks based on the current needs of the students or the current theme.
